A conservative group is planning a "J6 Awards Gala" in September at one of Donald Trump's golf courses to honor Americans who attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, injuring more than 140 police officers and destroying millions of dollars' worth of government property.

... The nonprofit group Stand in the Gap is planning the Sept. 5 charity event for families of Jan. 6 defendants at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. According to the group's website, the event will raise money and pay tribute to "all J6 defendants who have shown incredible courage and sacrifice."

The Trump campaign told USA TODAY he will not attend the gala, although the event lists him as an invited speaker alongside confirmed speakers Rudy Giuliani, a former New York City mayor and disbarred attorney, and Anthony Raimondi, a reputed mob enforcer.

Trump has repeatedly defended the actions of those who, at his urging, attacked the U.S. Capitol in a bid to disrupt Congress as it was certifying Joe Biden's election victory. Trump has called the Jan. 6 defendants "peaceful protesters" and "hostages" and said authorities are mistreating them. ...

... Dempsey, who is from Van Nuys, stomped on police officers' heads. He swung poles at officers defending a tunnel, struck an officer in the head with a metal crutch and attacked police with pepper spray and broken pieces of furniture, prosecutors said.

He climbed atop other rioters, using them like "human scaffolding" to reach officers guarding a tunnel entrance. He injured at least two police officers, prosecutors said.

"Your conduct on January 6th was exceptionally egregious," U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth told Dempsey. "You did not get carried away in the moment." ...
