US Government Agency Targeting Foreign Disinformation Shuts Down

The Global Engagement Center (GEC), a State Department unit established in 2016, shuttered on Monday at a time when officials and experts tracking propaganda have been warning of the risk of disinformation campaigns from US adversaries such as Russia and China.

What a failure by media. The State Dept Global Engagement Center responsible for countering disinformation shut down on Monday and barely any news on this. This was the doing of Republicans who capitalize off of Russian disinformation operations

It is unclear whether there is any remaining federal government entity tasked with collecting and analyzing foreign nation-state propaganda.

There may be some small lines of effort within the US IC, but unlikely to be on the same scale, and intention to publicly share their assessments on the same level, as the now-closed Global Engagement Center.

There's no doubt who had a hand in this strategy.

For Elon Musk's "X' (formerly Twitter) this is also a cash cow.

Thinking ahead . . .

I suppose allowing volumes of Russian propaganda on "X" is preparation for re-educating the public for when Trump decides to not only support but also help finance Russia's expansion. (post-Ukraine)

There will come a time when egos clash between Trump and Musk and Trump will think he's smart enough to run the whole show by himself. Musk will be a handy scapegoat.

I think the same thing will happen between Trump and Putin after Mr. Putin restores the power of the old U.S.S.R. He won't need Trump anymore.
