Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, May 29, 2025

Zaur Gurtsiev, Deputy Mayor of the Russian city of Stavropol who led an airborne operation to capture Mariupol, has been permanently removed from the chessboard by an explosion on the night of 28-29 May. A man identified as Nikita Penkov (29) approached the veteran special operations officer, a Russian military hero, and activated a hand grenade which neither of them survived. Prima facie, this appears to be a martyrdom operation against Zaur Gurtsiev, a former Russian paratrooper. Russian authorities suspect Ukrainian involvement. Previous Ukraine GUR missions behind enemy lines utilized escape plans or remote detonation devices. See video of operation in link.

Does the suicide/sacrifice comment of this assassination seem to be a new feature vis a vis the Ukraine war?

"Comment" meant to be "component"

Hi Doc: Good question. Some nefarious groups have used unwitting dupes as couriers, not knowing they were carrying an explosive device that would be remotely detonated. This might be the case here since we can't really see if Nikita Penkov is actually activating the hand grenade himself. If he did, then indeed this was a dedicated martyrdom mission and a new component of the war. But the Ukrainian sabotage services would be loath to lose an asset behind enemy lines who can remove another player from the chessboard. The other part of this mystery is why Deputy Mayor Zaur Gurtsiev is meeting Nikita Penkov at night and outside and who filmed this?
