President Trump discussed expanding the legally questionable military operation he has undertaken over the past several weeks, in which nine airstrikes at sea have resulted in 37 acknowledged deaths. The Senate is expected to vote next week on a bipartisan resolution that would bar the US from engaging in hostilities inside Venezuela without explicit authorization by Congress. In 2002 President George W. Bush asked Congress for authorization to use military force against Iraq. Congress approved that measure, and the AUMF has been cited for decades as the legal basis for military operations around the world carried out by subsequent administrations of both parties. Previous administrations from both parties and Congress did not rein in the AUMF, and neither did they rein in the power of DHS and ICE, so here we are today with President Donald Trump taking advantage of that oversight by previous administrations to maximize full use of the US military and federal law-enforcement agencies against undesirables, political foes, and chimeric international enemies.
Worst. President. Ever.
