By way of background, America's nuclear arsenal are strategic weapons in USAF and USN control falling under the "Nuclear Surety Program" and no atomic weapons are under US Army control. Senior US Army leadership historically felt left out of the nuclear club, so during the Cold War, the Pershing missile system gave them theater-level nukes in West Germany until 1991. Decades ago, US Army Special Forces soldiers were trained to deploy "nuclear backpacks" behind enemy lines. One SOF warrior would carry the ultra-heavy backpack while his comrade carried both their rucksacks. This program was eventually retired. There was one historic moment when the US Army got to detonate its very own nuclear weapon. On 25 May 1953 in Nevada, the US Army fired a nuclear artillery round with a 15 kt yield from the M65 cannon, "Atomic Annie," named after a German WWII weapon. The explosion yielded the same destructive level as "Little Boy" and the M65 never fired another nuke again. |
