The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is proposing to eliminate the foundational safety principle of "ALARA" that has for 50 years minimized the radiation Americans are exposed to. US facilities such as nuclear plants, hospitals, or academic institutions that use radioactive materials must ensure radiation exposures are kept "as low as reasonably achievable" (ALARA) -- a philosophy that has been adopted around the world. The NRC proposal would abandon this approach while keeping a separate standard on maximum radiation exposure. Americans can expect an increase in cancer prevalency in the future |
