Six Australian universities have quietly closed Chinese government-linked Confucius Institutes (CI) on their campuses, leaving seven open nationwide. Canberra has ramped up scrutiny on the education centers over concerns that Beijing is using them to spread propaganda and spy on Chinese international students. Beijing says its Confucius Institutes, which offer Chinese language and cultural classes overseas, are a "bridge reinforcing friendship" with the world. Western intelligence agencies have been concerned about Beijing's global reach through these education centers. Some universities in America and Europe also closed some of their branches. AI estimates there are approximately 30 Confucius Institutes operating in the US, down from a peak of around 1,201. In Canada, there are 13 Confucius Institutes operating.

Some Chinese- and Taiwanese-Americans avoid Shen Yun performances in North America out of fear they will be eavesdropped, have their photos secretly taken by Wu Maos or MSS agents, or have their Smartphones hacked: www.firstpoint-mg.com

One of my Chinese professors in college worked at some of these institutes. There's probably some truth that some Chinese spying or cultural subversion goes on in them, just like there's probably some truth that it goes on in US NGOs, but I don't that's representative of them in either case.

Not sure if he worked at one in the U.S., but I know he was assigned to some in Thailand and also in Pakistan. He told me that that he heard OBL was hiding out in a village close to where he was. He also talked about how insanely hot it was there.

While all countries spy on each other and their people, China has a history of "enforced disappearances." These Confucius Institutes innocuously collect info for Beijing which uses the "thousand grains of sand" approach, amassing a huge database to crush dissent or catch Taiwanese, US, or Australian spies.
