Ukraine’s SBU Chief Resigns, Assumes Other Role in Agency

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on 5 Jan that Vasyl Maliuk will step down as head of Ukraine's effective Security Service (SBU) but will remain in the agency to focus on asymmetric operations against Russia.

Vasyl Maliuk is staying in the SBU to carry out what he described as world class asymmetric operations aimed at inflicting "maximum damage" on Moscow.

Under Maliuk's leadership, the SBU " widely seen as loyal to the President's Office " arrested several anti-corruption investigators, accusing them of having ties to Russia.

The SBU framed the crackdown as a counterintelligence effort aimed at neutralizing Moscow's alleged influence within the bureau.
Anti-corruption activists and civil society groups rejected that explanation, arguing the arrests targeted detectives investigating figures close to Zelensky.

The investigators were later released.

At the recent meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing," which is comprised of 35 countries, Italy stated that they would not contribute forces as peacekeepers in any post-conflict arrangement between Kiev and Moscow; France and the UK stated they would. Canada PM Mark Carney pledged $2.5bn in aid and mentioned that deploying Canadian soldiers is currently a "possibility."

Russia lost more than 90,000 troops over the past three months; 1,040 in the last 24 hours.

A big gorill', former D/SBU Vasyl Malyuk (R) was personally involved in investigating Colonel Dmytro Kozyura (L) a Ukrainian SBU officer working for Moscow. Malyuk stated that through this traitor, the SBU fed the Kremlin disinformation during the course of his counterintelligence operation.
