It's not that Harvard isn't serious about education.
It's that Harvard is very particular about who they want to receive their education and how their school is perceived.
Legacy and large donor admissions are a big big deal to them.
Harvard tries to be ranked very high on various lists.
law school
business school
engineering
medicine
etc...
They want to be ranked high but they also need to balance it with lowering their standards for legacy and donor admissions.
FWIW, their law school recently dropped out of the coveted T3 of law schools.
