Now this quote, from the junior Senator from Missouri, should tickle Major DEI Boaz:

I am horrified by the speech - Schmitt references Missouri so many times that I want to scream. He is reinforcing the White supremacy that I specifically taught my students to watch for ... to listen for. To speak out against.

Senator Schmitt even went so far as to make light of George Floyd's killing. The entire speech had a "blood and soil" feel. It makes me sick. I am embarrassed to be his constituent.

Schmitt is Major DEI Boazo's kind of white guy.

For a few decades, we have made a conscious effort to highlight the experiences of minority groups in curriculum - no such effort is required for the majority because their experience is always present.

I think it is incredibly important to teach rural kids the literature and history of marginalized groups. Many of my former students lived in White spaces with limited travel experiences.

So, I applied for scholarships to learn what I had not been taught, and I traveled the country every summer to learn to be a better teacher. I studied slavery in New York and Mount Vernon and Atlanta and Charleston.

My students had the advantage of learning the history I had never learned. I had the confidence to teach the hard truth.

My usual response? Because every month is White History Month. History is written by the victors - and colonizers. Much of the American history and literature we learned for generations erased the contributions of marginalized groups.

A strange fact is that much of the history and literature I learned in the South was written by the losers, not the victors. I learned an entirely incorrect version of history because my textbooks and curriculum were shaped by The Daughters of the Confederacy - I didn't understand that until college.

That was purposeful.

That prompted Steve Bannon, the former adviser to President Donald Trump, to cast Shapiro as a "cancer." By conducting their argument in public, the two sides"those who criticize anti-Semitism and those who tolerate it"were essentially begging Vance, the headliner of the event, to render a verdict.

When presented with the simplest moral test, Vance failed. "We have far more important work to do than canceling each other," he said, as if anti-Semitism were just one more woke fixation.

But, but, but, the implosion of the Heritage Foundation is nevertheless a thing of beauty and a joy at least for this week. And it is yet another sign of the divisions simmering within the conservative cult.

In an editorial headlined, "The Heritage Foundation Blows Up," The Wall Street Journal editorial board writes:

Heritage abandoned its principles, it is losing its people, and soon there might not be much left to donate to.

It's hard to overstate the impact that Heritage has played in modern American conservativism, or its devolution into MAGAism. (I devoted a chapter to Heritage's decline in my 2017 book, "How the Right Lost Its Mind.")

He said the foundation had "fallen" because it had embraced elements of isolationism, stopped backing Ukraine in the war with Russia, supported some tariffs and backed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health and Human Services secretary, among other things.

Obviously, notes of caution are in order: Reaganism isn't about to make a comeback, and Mike Pence is unlikely to rise from the GOP dead.

When it comes to elections, people in focus groups say they want honest, truthful, and caring leaders who will bring the country together. Then they vote for the most extreme candidate their party offers. Politicians know this, so in many primaries, the candidates compete to be the most extreme. Both sides do it. Republicans are legendary for doing this, and take their extremes to particularly extreme places, but the blue team does it as well. Just watch the primary for NY-12, which stretches from Union Square to the northern end of Central Park in midtown Manhattan. There Republican-turned-temporary-Democrat George Conway and JFK's grandson, Jack Schlossberg, will spend the next 6 months each claiming they HATE Donald Trump with the heat of 100 suns, no 1,000 suns, no make that 10,000 suns, no, I bid 100,000 suns. Working together with him for the good of the country? Are you out of your mind?

Many voters actually feel that unity is a luxury good. When the other side comes to its senses, we can try it, but first they have to be crushed into submission. Then we can talk unity. When Texas drew a new congressional map, did Christians in California turn the other cheek? Are you kidding? When Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) mocked Trump on eX-Twitter and made him look like a fool, did Democrats scold him? No, they made him the (temporary) frontrunner for 2028. This is a revealed preference. Yet when polled, 87% of Democrats and 85% of Republicans say the country is near a breaking point. But when they vote, they choose to make it worse. (V)

n the focus groups, voters tell her over and over how they hate how divided the country has become and how nasty politics now is. They want to change it. They really do. In the 13 federal elections from 2000 onward, 11 times either at least one chamber of Congress or the White House changed hands. Only in 2004 and 2012 did nothing change.

Why do we keep ratcheting up the toxicity when most people hate it? In marketing, this divide is known as "stated preferences" vs. "revealed preferences." It is the difference between what people say they want and what they actually want. For example, people say they hate how the airlines cram them in like sardines, give them a small packet of pretzels for dinner, and nickel and dime them on everything (didn't bring your own seat belt? Fine. We can rent you ours for $10). But the people actually buy the cheapest tickets, which pushes the airlines to reduce services in order to offer the lowest fares.
