Lawmakers in the House and the Senate have until 30 Jan to avoid a government shutdown. So far, they have passed six out of the 12 appropriations bills needed to fund the government. Last week, the House passed an additional two-bill package known as a minibus that would fund the State Department and the Treasury Department. Senators will take that minibus up after they come back from their recess next week.

So far, there appears to be little appetite among Democrats for another shutdown.

However, the DHS appropriations bill has become a significant point of contention between both parties.

Democrats in the House and the Senate have called for an overhaul of ICE after Jonathan Ross killed an unarmed woman in cold blood in Minneapolis. Democrats say they will oppose the DHS bill unless it includes tougher oversight and conduct guidelines for ICE officers.

The last government shutdown began at the start of October and lasted 43 days. That shutdown was over extending Affordable Care Act subsidies.

The ICE Sturmabteilung will probably be funded through budgetary chicanery in the event of a shutdown.

The potential government shutdown won't affect the Trumpf junta from sending hardworking American taxpayer dollars to the Israeli Death Forces (IDF).

US aid to Israel is classified under security-related funding, which is often exempt from shutdown-related freezes. Junta apparatchiks have confirmed that all funding to Israel remains unaffected during these shutdown periods, ensuring that lethal military aid continues to be used to ethnically cleanse Gaza and the West Bank of Palestinians. In Florida, another Republican grifter-- the Surgeon-General-- is making money off rubes.

Good point about the public defenders and scarce resources.

In EDNY, if drug mules from Colombia were caught on the same flight landing at JFK or a gang of low-income robbers were arrested, only one of them could get assigned a federal public defender. The Court Clerk would then assign a contracted defense counsel for the rest of the culprits in the gang.

One of these contracted attorneys made a small fortune for himself doing this. But this lawyer was cheap and sloppy. He would use the same documents to defend each of his clients "cookie-cutter style" but he would forget to "cut and paste" the correct names at times. I would read Document A from him about client A, but the name for Client C would appear somewhere in the paperwork.

This type of sloppy defense is not in the best interest of the defendant and everybody saw it.

Public defenders (like NYS AG Letitia James when she started her career) were the hardest working attorneys I ever came across.

If a defendant was facing capital charges, better to have one of them as defense counsel than a slick $1,000 per hour shyster.

The Legal Aid Society lawyers would go up the gallows with their clients.
