The question, I have would be why does the US need voter rolls? Why do you need to register?
If you had a VOTERID of some sort (national card or citizen card or whatever) why would you need to have this whole system, which can be undermined?

That's a feature, not a bug.
The fact that the GOP wants to require a card to exercise a constitutional right before that card is provided to all voters accomplishes their only goal, which is to make sure that they suppress votes from those who are more likely to go against them.
The GOP has been talking about requiring voter ID for decades. But not once have they taken steps to automatically issue IDs to all citizens entitled to vote.
