I'm 56 and debt free. I owned two homes until recently. I'm semi-retired because I didn't sit around and play the victim card or live like money is free. People are poor because of schtty life choices... Almost every.... single... -------... time. But most of you will use the exception for the argument. Anyone over 25 working a minimum wage job is doing so because of their decisions, or they're retired and looking for some structure in their life. Hell, I know people who make really good money, and they're still poor because they throw it at every shiny thing they see.

Someone upthread said something about a man in the 1950's being able to support a family on one income... Has anyone looked at the size of those houses they lived in? The cheap cars with no amenities they drove? A lot of them built their own home and there were no granite counter tops, central A/C or Jacuzzi type tubs. At some point, everyone wanted to keep up with the Jones' and began to afford what they wanted by paying interest on debt. I don't feel any worse for them than I do for the middle-aged person at the 7/11 cash register.
