... Total liabilities among US households swelled to a record $19.9 trillion at the end of the first quarter, according to Fed data, a sign that Americans are continuing to borrow and fund their spending.

Yet, the personal savings rate is hovering near a record low, shrinking to 2.6% in April, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. ...

"The US consumer currently resembles the Wile E. Coyote character, running off the cliff and suspended in thin air briefly, before collapsing," Edwards said, referring to the potential for consumer spending to see a sharp drop if Americans were motivated to save more, such as if stock prices were to take a beating.

"It doesn't take a Fed PhD economist to tell us that if the US saving ratio (SR) stops falling, consumer spending will grow in line with income, which is falling. And woe betide the economy if the SR actually rises back to more normal levels," he added. ...

Don't more Alaskans have pilot's licenses than driver's licenses?

Hell, they've got private planes. What do we have here in the lower 48? Uber?

The world's doing just fine. You don't have to make all ends meet. Just one at a time by whatever means, then start running from away from the next one. Been there, done that.

It's the American way.

AK is not for the faint of heart. You can make a lot of money working there... it just takes so much to live there. All the money you save on taxes is spent on essentials. It's not unusual for people to work on the North Slope but live in TN, VA, KY... they set the schedules 6 weeks on 4 weeks off and such...

For me, the most scary thing about what is going on in our country is that no one is in charge...it seems that someone put the needs of the 1% over the rest of us, and put all thinking to align with that perspective. Cut taxes for the rich, and when social programs are hurting, blame the poor for their poverty, blame the sick...and so on. We clearly are falling fast to a sort of grand depression for those of us at the bottom and an economic heaven for the Mar a Lago crowd.

I've found it's almost the best way to pay for a higher education. All the aid is based on that.

Just be poor....or really rich. In between is hard.

Okay....I'm being a little sarcastic but after the taxes I've paid while paying for a private school education and college for 3 kids...still working on the youngest one.

I haven't used a credit card since the 90s. I dug myself a big (for the time) credit hole when I was in the Marine Corps right after high school and it took a while to get out. I'm fortunate enough that I haven't needed one and that I learned early what it means to actually live within my means. I had to say no to a few trips with friends etc when I was young and broke but also avoided debt and the ugly cycle that goes with it.

Having said that I'm not sure I could have done that if I was starting out in today's economy.

Everything the Trump administration has done has been to keep poor people poor and further increase the wealth of the wealthy.

Also, for car wrecks, 38% of people are taking the check and then not fixing their vehicles. Up from 8% 2 years ago.

I know 18 year old idiots who are training for tech jobs that will pay $30/hour when they are out.

My 18 year old is making $22/hr working construction this summer. In Kansas, BTW.

Here is a rough guideline to avoid earning anything near the federal minimum wage

1. Be sober
2. show up on time
3. have a drivers license

Those 3 will assure you of making triple the minimum wage even if you possess no other real skills. I'm guessing you're going to fall short on some of those?

Clownshack...seriously...do you know a single person making the minimum wage....let's assume it's the California minimum wage?

Primarily for having nothing more than minimum skills. Honestly, I can't think of anybody who can only make federal minimum wage.

In the 1950s, a man could care for their family of 4 with a single income earning minimum wage.

Then people will like you were told to hate minimum wage earners and look down on them. That they didn't deserve a living wage. They were stupid and they deserved less.

So now minimum wage is seen as something for people to make while trying to find a real job.

Meanwhile, people working minimum wage jobs have to put in 40 hours regardless in order to keep their jobs, so must have to take a second job.

And then you sit here and talk about them as if they're worthless people because when you were younger, you did everything right.

But I doubt you were ever poor. So I'm not sure why you have advice for poor people. You didn't do anything to escape poverty. You simply accepted the opportunity available to you. Opportunity which isn't available to them.

I completely understand the flaw of the cost of higher education that results in a job that makes it very difficult to service that student loan debt and be able to afford rent, transportation, etc.

But despite that.....they still have to take the same steps I took back when I had student loans and had to afford rent, a car, and my starbucks and avocado toast. LOL

I know. Then we went off the rails and started crazy things that screwed over that minimum skilled man.

like civil rights, the ERA, etc....you know.....things that leveled the playing field. Then we asked that minimum skilled man to compete with men from other countries for the same job.

And now that same minimum skilled man can't care for his family on minimum wage.

Can we dispense with the whining about that and move on to what's realistic?

I'll tell you what...I'll leave you kids to scream about minimum wage and foster care.
I was talking about how kids in their 20s with a real job can get benefit from denying themselves some creature comforts that can wait a while longer. To push back on their desire to indulge until they knock out some debt.
Not to disparage minimum wage workers or foster care kid.
Geez......

So, this "explosion in household debt" is entirely because of "creature comforts" according to you.

Education, housing, food, fuel, healthcare, childcare, etc.. are all negotiable by simply "denying themselves".

It's obvious that "option" was decided for them by parasite wealth.

In a world full of billionaires and a trillionaire?

Why?

The problem is people aren't working hard enough.

The problem is Rich People are hoarding wealth.

The idea that poor people need to suck it up is propaganda spread by the Rich.

Again, there was a time in America where a single income household could afford to live a minimum wage life.

Greedy people want more money and miserable people were panicking that the poor were starting to make advances. So they flooded America with propaganda, convincing poor whites that blacks and minorities were benefiting.

And this country has been declining ever since.

There was a point in time when the wealthy would build museums or parks or community centers or something. A reinvestment into the community in which they and their employees live in which they could write off on their taxes.

Nowadays thanks to Republicans handing out so many tax cuts.

The wealthy are just buying themselves bigger and bigger yachts. And with their leftover money, they're building rocket ships to Mars.

Consider it your opportunity to educate the ignorant.

What is the average wait time in-between jobs? I believe last yearish it averaged 11 months including the higher educated.

How does anyone pay rent during that period? OnlyFans? Crypto-scamming?

Would an unemployment fund help those people? Considering states responsibilities it's strange that debt raises among all states simultaneously.. strange..

Or, maybe a higher wage in preparation for separation? Where are those jobs? Would that mean moving out of state to chase it until I need to chase the next one?

Are unemployment aid, regulated costs and better wages essentially pipe dreams?

How do you imagine those 20 year olds are expected to succeed without enacting them?

We live in a society.

It's not on a 25-year-old to fix decades of Republican tax cuts for the wealthy.

We can't do it all by ourselves and that's another problem.

Growing up, I always pictured America as one unified country that stood together.

It wasn't until college that I realized that Americans have been so far divided that individual states and individual cities and individual counties and individual people have been trained that they need to do it all on their own and the country isn't here to help them for any reason at all.

People are poor because of schtty life choices... Almost every.... single... -------... time. But most of you will use the exception for the argument. Anyone over 25 working a minimum wage job is doing so because of their decisions, or they're retired and looking for some structure in their life. Hell, I know people who make really good money, and they're still poor because they throw it at every shiny thing they see.

Someone upthread said something about a man in the 1950's being able to support a family on one income... Has anyone looked at the size of those houses they lived in? The cheap cars with no amenities they drove? A lot of them built their own home and there were no granite counter tops, central A/C or Jacuzzi type tubs. At some point, everyone wanted to keep up with the Jones' and began to afford what they wanted by paying interest on debt. I don't feel any worse for them than I do for the middle-aged person at the 7/11 cash register.

Outsourcing will happen to every job if AI can replace them.

The last house I rented was made in 1953. Solid but tiny - the original flooring is wood except the art deco kitchen tiles. Even the exterior color had been kept as close to original mint and red clover surrounded the unkept grounds. A very mature holly leading into the gardens was such an important aspect to it's appeal, but sections had been destroyed by arson. I resurrected as much as I could - feet in the dirt, but the fern trees were too far gone and no viable spores survived to even consider acceleration. The owner told me they brought it from a trip to Australia, so I turned it's space into a water feature and set up a hummingbird station.

I'll obviously be in the second floor hot tub awaiting your response with my inferior skill set.

I admit my situation is special, how lucky I am.

The only times I felt truly persecuted was over employment because that directly impacts my livelihood. The aggro encounters at bus stops, stores, gyms, whereever are something I can handle with wit, grace or flirtation. I'm not good with fire on fire interactions; I'm more rainbow - so, not the shark that most companies expect, just the humor.

In your opinion have gay people been less likely to be employed because they were gay? Even my contracted experience makes me leery of working with heterosexual-only groups - am I the phobe??

Honestly minimum wage shouldn't be a living wage, it should be an entry level wage for new young workers without work experience, and even then it should be like $15 per hour. Jobs that require experience should be paying a livable wage relative to the area you are working in. Something like 3x the average rent would be a suitable equation. If the average rent in your town is $1250, then livable wage would be about $21.63 per hour. Also, it should not require two working adults to raise a family, someone needs to be home to actually parent these kids.

So they are more grounded in reality and facts than anything you're used to.

I understand your frustration.

Business Insider " Bias and Credibility

These media sources have a slight to moderate liberal bias. They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes) to favor liberal causes. These sources are generally trustworthy for information but may require further investigation. See all Left-Center sources.

Overall, we rate Business Insider Left-Center Biased based on story selection that leans left. We also rate them as Mostly Factual in reporting rather than high due to the occasional use of poor sources and a failed fact check.

minimum wage shouldn't be a living wage, it

If an employer is expecting their employee to work a 40 hour week. The employee should not be required to hold a second job in order to pay rent and make ends meet.

Something like 3x the average rent would be a suitable equation.

Agreed.

"He's also one of the few people here that I can disagree with and still hold somewhat of a discussion with."

Jesus Christ, none of you can even climb up to a point where we can actually disagree with something.

All I said was I will give proper direction to kids who are trying to make it in this environment. That's it.

That is NOT a defense for a low minimum wage nor expensive rent, etc. It's NOT a condemnation for being in that situation.

All you can deflect with is it's the billionaires and they've brainwashed me somehow.

WTF is wrong you morons? Don't tell me I've fallen victim to propaganda. You 100% know that's not true.

It's not possible any of you even for a second think I've fallen victim for such absurdity.

raising the minimum wage to a "living wage" is 100% politically unrealistic. Is it mean to simply acknowledge that?

Is it irresponsible to give such advice to youngsters who are trying to succeed?

Move forward. Yes, advocate for what's realisitc and can help those who need it.

seriously......1440 is free

and I'm still shocked at what I found thanks to insomnia...

NBC has an unbiased news program....probably why it's at 5 am EST.

today the reporter said...president trump said this....they played the cut...

"vice president vance met with ??? then they play his comments...

the reporter then said something like this....democrats and some gop have misgivings about

the agreement to talk....then they play clips.

THEN the reporter will say...." that's what happened in DC yesterday'

and then the GOOD LOOKING HOST>....Francis Rivera says...."thank you for that report"

--no comments are yapping........but on to the next topic.........AGAIN I'm certain

that's why it's at 5 am EST...........I strongly urge anyone to give it a listen.

we went off the rails and started crazy things that screwed over that minimum skilled man.
like civil rights, the ERA, etc....you know.....things that leveled the playing field. Then we asked that minimum skilled man to compete with men from other countries for the same job.
And now that same minimum skilled man can't care for his family on minimum wage.

This sure sounds like stuff you heard Trump (or some other racist blowhard) say, owing to your lack of education and critical thinking skills you believed my believed it, and finally put it into your own words.

But it's all lies.

Immigration doesn't drive down wages.
Civil Rights didn't drive down wages.
The ERA didn't do anything because it's never been enacted.

ARONCZYK: Immigrants are not bananas. They buy stuff. They start businesses. They do all kinds of things that help shape the economy. Now, this Mariel boatlift paper was written about one place at one time, but since David Card wrote it, variations on this experiment have been done repeatedly. And over and over again, economists have found the same thing - in the long run, immigrants do not really make unemployment go up or wages go down. More often than not, there is no detectable effect.

-She'll tell you all about how the islamists and trans are destroying the country.

That generation in my family has all died.

most of them too early due to lifestyle.

-Also, it should not require two working adults to raise a family, someone needs to be home to actually parent these kids.

You mean make more sacrifices and choices that appear to be falling victim to the billionaire fueled propaganda?

I was chastised for suggesting folks acclimate themselves to the environment they are in.

but seriously.....again, you need to understand economics.

When most parents are working then the incomes go up....the demand goes up.....

It's not like they are going to reduce the cost of housing based on 1 parent staying home. And when most households have both parents working.....that's why the cost is so high.

yep. And nobody is changing it.

There is no political party who's interested in changing it.

If you understood that, then you'd probably shut up about it.

But you clearly must believe there is some glimmer of hope we are going to increase the federal minimum wage to some outrageously higher number.

#97 | Posted by eberly

Today's employers send jobs to Vietnam.
Poor people didn't do that.
Rich people did that to poor people's jobs.

See Also: Illegal immigrants can't take American citizens jobs.
Illegal immigrants can only be given American citizens jobs.
Given by employers, wanting to pay poor people even less.

That people need to learn how to save. Less vacations.

To which I snarked, why didn't you mention the avocado toast and Starbucks lattes.

Regardless. Until minimum wage start paying people enough to live on, your suggestion is moot.

People are living within their means. By getting 3 roommates. Living in vans. Moving back in with their parents.

None of these are signs of a healthy economy or a successful nation.

"There is no political party who's interested in changing it."

Incorrect.

Republicans would like to eliminate the minimum wage.
Most Red states don't even have a State minimum wage.
Most Blue states and cities have enacted a minimum wage higher than the Federal.

"People are living within their means. By getting 3 roommates. Living in vans. Moving back in with their parents."

Coincidentally, this is how most poor immigrants live.

Poor Americans are behaving like illegal immigrants, when it comes to making ends meet.

Republicans blame it on anything and everything but low wages.

No, that's just another right wing Trump thing you're dutifully regurgitating.

"Home prices rose 2.4 times faster than inflation since 1960s, study finds."

"The trend holds if the timeline is narrowed, too. Since 2013, inflation has clocked in at 31% while the median home price has risen by 63%."

Women working since 2013 didn't cause housing inflation to double overall inflation.
