From what I gather, in the US the focus tends to be on NFL, NBA, MLB, so the good athletes will gravitate to those sports.

But eventually, the average size person players (who could be great footballers) lose out, to the NFL, NBA, MLB sized players. Unfortunately, these players are now too old get experience and play well in the MLS, or Euro leagues. This is also true for Japan (baseball is huge). Japan had excellent coaching.

Women, on the other hand, don't have this issue, soccer being more popular for them, and also it's more acceptable here for women to play sports, which unfortunately might add to the fertility crisis the US is experiencing.
