How I've Been Convincing Christians They Don't Have to Vote Republican

Doug Pagitt: Democrats need to embrace the idea that evangelicals, and especially white male evangelicals, are worth winning and can be won.

Many so-called Christians and evangelicals will vote for Der Dotard, because 'he got rid of abortion', ignoring how this fat orange criminal insurrectionist and golf cheat comes nowhere close to living as Jesus directed. Even Catholics (of which I'm one) are far more nuanced, with most Catholics I know seeking leaders who embody the "Men for Others" spirit that my Jesuit teachers espoused. Trump and JV do not, in any discernable way, live lives focused on good works, serving others and giving of themselves to those less fortunate.

For most, this is an easy sell--choosing between a self-centered rich guy who would kick beggars to the curb before helping them, or a woman who founded her professional life on defending the State and its residents from criminals of a wide variety. The phonies who vote for 45 because they are 'Christian' should change their description of themselves to 'Hypocrite', and we all know that JC did not like hypocrites...

Before school desegregation, and for a while after that, many evangelicals didn't give a rip about politics. You can find old videos of fundamentalist preachers advocating for abortion rights because in their minds the "pro-life" movement was the Vatican's attempt to infiltrate American government.

Did we really just have to convince him that Trump isn't kind enough to be worthy of a Christian's vote?

Homework assignment. Read the New Testament.

No, actually read it. Closely. Like you would an internet classified ad.

Christian Nationalists are the least educated voters in America. It should be no surprise that they are overwhelmingly in support of Trump.

"Christians get out and vote. Just this time," he urged. "You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years. You know what? It'll be fixed. It'll be fine. You won't have to vote anymore my beautiful Christians."

white male evangelicals, are worth winning and can be won.

If you can get them out of their White Christian Nationalist bubble.

Well worth your time. But be prepared to be depressed. A lot of money has gone into putting them into that bubble.
