Trump Voters Got What They Wanted

Tom Nichols: Those who expect that Donald Trump will hurt others, and not them, are likely to be unpleasantly surprised.

FTA:

[I]n the end, a majority of American voters chose Trump because they wanted what he was selling: a nonstop reality show of rage and resentment. . . .

Back in 2021, I wrote a book about the rise of "illiberal populism," the self-destructive tendency in some nations that leads people to participate in democratic institutions such as voting while being hostile to democracy itself, casting ballots primarily to punish other people and to curtail everyone's rights"even their own. These movements are sometimes led by fantastically wealthy faux populists who hoodwink gullible voters by promising to solve a litany of problems that always seem to involve money, immigrants, and minorities. The appeals from these charlatans resonate most not among the very poor, but among a bored, relatively well-off middle class, usually those who are deeply uncomfortable with racial and demographic changes in their own countries.

And so it came to pass: Last night, a gaggle of millionaires and billionaires grinned and applauded for Trump. They were part of an alliance with the very people another Trump term would hurt"the young, minorities, and working families among them.

There's also the possibility that Lewzer just won't do anything. No reason for him to. Vance will have his work cut out for him though.

DonOLD won't have to do any actual work. The Republican Party , through the auspices of the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation, will do all the work. It's their agenda today's GOP wants enact. As long as DonOLD can talk on the phone, play golf, give speeches, strut around like a peacock while raking in money and lavish compliments, he'll be a happy camper until he craps out. Those who know him best say he is big on revenge, so settling scores with all his political enemies is the only "work" he will do and relish while doing it.

And I can't wait to see them suffer the results of their choices.

Uncharacteristically, I'll say that Dems should stop beating up on themselves and firing volleys back and forth. (They can get back to that later.) American voters - as I've been warning for years - are changing, and becoming more like Trump. That's hard to counteract. /1

Maybe the mistake we all made was thinking America would elect a Black woman. I had a gut feeling they would not. But in any case, when elections are about feelings, fantasies, boredom, and resentment, the candidate who services those delusions has a natural advantage. /2

Democrats are understandably focused on voters who flipped because they're suffering economically. But a far larger number of voters werfe un-flippable and not poor! They're the comfortable Trumpers who think, like, Canada conspired with Michelle O to hijack voting machines. /3

When millions of people think that way, you can't agonize *too* much over losing another 3 pts during a global backlash against inflation (that no govt could have stopped and that the US handled well).
Especially when you've won impt House/Senate races in all those states./4

The Democrats should definitely have a reckoning about their inability to recognize that becoming the party of the college-educated (which is what the GOP used to be) has affected their ability to message. And you're seeing some rumbles already. /5

But no Dem can change the fact that millions of ungettable GOP votes are set in stone not because of economic conditions - which were the best any candidate could have hoped for - but because even relatively affluent voters have spent years marinating in complete craziness. /6

And I'll add, again, that this is not some post-hoc rationalization based on this week. I've written about this for years, and warned about it at length in a book I wrote more than four years ago. That's really why I just couldn't be optimistic about this election. /7x

I want people to ponder this story

Texas Court to Weigh Overtime Rule With Trump Rescission Looming

The state of Texas and businesses will try to convince a federal district court that the US Labor Department went beyond its authority with a rule expanding overtime protections, a case that could determine how much compliance whiplash employers face ahead of Donald Trump's new administration.

While parts of the Biden DOL's overtime rule went into effect earlier this year, the Lone Star state and industry groups are asserting during oral arguments Friday to get the largest phase of the rule blocked before it goes into place on Jan. 1.

TH: First, let me state this isn't complicated and certainly not a controversial take on this case.

Biden's Department of Labor changed overtime rules to cover certain white-collar jobs-think clerical types or draftsman types-solid lower middle-class professions.

These are, presumably, a backbone of the ------- coalition. This would have provided these professions with significant pay increases.

Texas and corporations SUED to have the rule implementation STOPPED.

There is NO WAY ------- will take up this fight.

Voting for ------- LITERALLY took money out of these people's pockets, like directly.

This type of ignorance is both baffling and frustrating.

So, again, please ponder.

Also ask yourself-will his voters ever know he took money out of their pockets? Will they even care?

Welp, some Trump voters may get what they didn't want:

New Trump admin to deliver 'body blow' to unions after courting union workers

President-elect Donald Trump courted union voters during his successful 2024 presidential bid, and now Bloomberg reports that his incoming administration is poised to deliver a "body blow" to organized labor that has enjoyed a significant renaissance under President Joe Biden's administration.

There's also the possibility that Lewzer just won't do anything.

That is certainly a possibility because the primary reason for him running for office was to stay out of jail. I strongly suspect that MAGA conservatives will try to push him into following through on his promises but he will be able to easily resist because of his pardon power. Many of those MAGA conservatives are likely un-named Jan 6 coconspirators looking to curry favor in hope for a pardon. They are not going to push to hard because even though the Jan 6 case will be dropped by the Trump DOJ, as long as the statue of limitations hasn't run it's course, a follow on dem DOJ can re-instate it and go after those that haven't been pardoned.

Appeals to follow through on his promises for the sake of the party will also fall on deaf ears because Trump cares only for himself.

My biggest concern about the incoming Trump admin is in the area of foreign policy. With compliant congress critters hoping for a pardon, he will be able to get away with even more actions that will tank America's standing in the world.
