Minnesota Election Judge Accepted Unregistered Votes

An election judge in Hubbard County is accused of accepting 11 unregistered votes. The election judge, a 64-year-old Nevis man, is charged with one count of accepting the vote of an unregistered voter and one count of neglect of duty on Election Day, according to the criminal complaint.

what crime did these 11 individuals commit that rendered them ineligible to vote?

I am an election judge in Illinois. People can register to vote on election day (or early voting) by providing two forms of ID, one must show their home address. A SS card or passport (no specific address on those IDs) are acceptable, however, another form with their address is needed - a utility bill or other first class mail are acceptable.

Wait.

So...the law says you can register and vote the same day, the would-be voters had the necessary paperwork, and THE OFFICE DIDN'T HAVE THE NEEDED FORM?!?

Sounds like the judge was reasonably addressing the actual problem.

Not all states are like that. If you're not registered 30 days before an election here, you're not voting.

IF that was the problem. From the article, the problem looks to be a wanton violation of the law: he literally TOLD election workers not to use the legally required form.

Minnesota allows day of registration, you need to register 20 days before election to be on the polling rolls.

If you are not registered to vote or need to update your registration information, you may do so at your local polling location on Election Day. However, you are required to provide proof of residence when registering on Election Day.

To register at your polling place on Election Day, you must have one of the following with your current name and address in the precinct to verify your residence:

A valid Minnesota driver's license, learner's permit, Minnesota ID card, or receipt for any of these
A valid student ID card including your photo, if your college has provided a student housing list to election officials
A Tribal ID card that contains your picture and signature
A valid registration in the same precinct under a different name or address
A notice of late registration sent to you by your county auditor or city clerk
A voter registered in the same precinct as you who can confirm your address with a signed oath
Alternatively, you may provide both 1) a photo ID from the list below, and 2) a current bill with your current name and address in the precinct.
