A Mutation Could Bring Bird Flu Closer to a New Pandemic

With the H5N1 bird flu virus spreading quickly across animals in the US, experts are on high alert for signs of human-to-human transmission. Such a jump could become far easier with just a single mutation, according to new research.

... While several of these morphing mutations are usually needed to put humans in danger from avian influenza, this time the transformation process could be quicker, scientists from the Scripps Research Institute in California found [link in the article].

"The findings demonstrate how easily this virus could evolve to recognize human-type receptors," says infectious disease scientist Ting-Hui Lin, first author of the new study. ...

A virus needs to locate compatible receptors on host cells to trigger an infection " something H5N1 has found in birds and animals, but not humans.

The researchers investigated the H5N1 2.3.4.4b strain of the virus found in recent human infections, finding that a single amino acid mutation in a key protein would be enough to switch the virus target from avian-type receptors to human-type receptors.

This mutation, labeled Q226L, could act like a new pair of glasses for the virus, allowing it to recognize landing points on human cells.

"Our experiments revealed that the Q226L mutation could significantly increase the virus' ability to target and attach to human-type receptors," says biochemist James Paulson. ...

"New Pandemic"?

And look see who we've got to protect us after 01/20/25.

A Mutation Could Bring Bird Flu Closer to a New Pandemic

I'm going to have to hear Brainworm Kennedy Jr's take on this first.

@#2 ... "New Pandemic"?

Yeah, that was (is) my concern also.

And a reason why I was initially reluctant to post this thread.

So far, the possible outcome in the article is just that, as the article states -- a possible outcome.

At this point, I am quite happy it is being monitored by government medical professionals.

fwiw, here's the original (and, if i may add, apparently not yet peer-reviewed) research article...

A single mutation in bovine influenza H5N1 hemagglutinin switches specificity to human receptors
www.science.org

...
Editor's summary
In 2021, a highly pathogenic influenza H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b virus was detected in North America that is capable of infecting a diversity of avian species, marine mammals, and humans. In 2024, clade 2.3.4.4b virus spread widely in dairy cattle in the US, causing a few mild human cases, but retaining specificity for avian receptors.

Historically, this virus has caused up to 30% fatality in humans, so Lin et al. performed a genetic and structural analysis of the mutations necessary to fully switch host receptor recognition.

A single glutamine to leucine mutation at residue 226 of the virus hemagglutinin was sufficient to enact the change from avian to human specificity.

In nature, the occurrence of this single mutation could be an indicator of human pandemic risk. "Caroline Ash

With muskhole and brain worm running the nation this should work out well.

Hey magoofs, better stock up on fish tank cleaner and horse paste.

I'm kind of surprised they were allowed to do this kind of research out of biosecurity concerns.

Similar studies were met with an uproar in the early 2010s and a moratorium on gain of function work in respiratory viruses was the result.

Granted, those were in live viruses used in animal models, but the overarching concern then of 'providing a roadmap for bioterrorists' is the same, even with this group's in vitro methods.

Regardless, this shows how little is really required for a serious event to kick off.

Potentially more than that. So far, this isn't showing the 35% case fatality rates avian H5N1 has shown over the past few decades of sporadic cases.

But even at 10%, you'd have lethality rates 10x that of COVID.

The only saving grace is that we already have FDA approved vaxx platforms in existence and likely some stocks of vaccines already produced. I'm sure an updated mRNA will be made available as well (potentially, I guess, depending on Kennedy) so it won't take nearly as long to start vaxxing the population as it did with COVID.

But even 3-5 months could lead to devastating effects on communities if people don't take it seriously.

It's peer reviewed. It's an early version that will likely see corrections prior to full release, but it's peer reviewed.

With the amount of illness that has been going around animal farms in general - like herds of Cows full of it, dead cats, sick workers at the same time... It is only a matter of time before this new lab accident spreads like wildfire through people.

Honestly I am in week 7 of an illness - turned the corner about a week ago finally. I didn't test positive for COVID multiple times. Didn't test positive for "the flu" either. Maybe I should have been tested for avian flu. Frankly I got ill after cleaning an area full of bird mess.

We know with certainty that people won't take it seriously.
