For the first time in modern history, the House majority will rest on thinner margins than the Senate's in the 119th Congress.

More from the article...

... Why it matters: The House is going to be a bigger headache for President-elect Trump than the Senate.

- - - The chaos of the past few days is just the tasting menu for a banquet of what's to come in two weeks.

- - - "This is comparatively straightforward," Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) told reporters about the government shutdown showdown. "Reconciliation is very tough. It's very complicated, and they can't manage this. This has been a disaster."

What to watch: The Senate plans to use reconciliation to work around the filibuster and pass political priorities with a simple majority.

- - - They can even afford to lose a couple of votes from the likes of Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Susan Collins (R-Maine) or Rand Paul (R-Ky.)

- - - But they could face a dilemma the House usually has to deal with " watching a bill get changed or die in the other chamber.

By the numbers: The 119th Congress will begin with six more Senate Republicans than Senate Democrats, while the House will start with four more Republicans than Democrats, assuming former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) does not get sworn in for a new term. ...

Anything that makes Donald weaker makes the United States stronger.

It's the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, and Donald is still a rapist all day long.

Trump's pit bull is doing his best. He's threated to kill (the careers) of anybody who gets in the way of Trump's agenda.

At least I think he meant "careers." I'm not sure. Mobsters do have a tendency to talk in code.

#4 Well you're the expert on kill threats. You hold the title of the first poster to call for the assassination of Trump, back when that was frowned upon.

Mobsters do have a tendency to talk in code.

Senior Co-President Elon seems more like a Bond villain than a mobster.

Well, he has been hanging around "Godfather" Trump a long time.

he has been hanging around "Godfather" Trump a long time.

Be fun to see how long that lasts. Lewzer won't put up with being second banana for long.

"Lewzer won't put up with being second banana for long."

So, who thinks Speaker Johnson is on his way out and Elmo Musk is on his way in . . . to brow beat the Republican caucus into bobble heads.

#12 | Posted by Twinpac at 2024-12-22 02:12 AM

Elmo Musk is on his way in . . .

He won't be Speaker. He couldn't handle it.

#13 | Posted by REDIAL at 2024-12-22 02:59 AM

Chip Roy and most of that gaggle of broken psyches probably have a price (or prices) but Trump might not be in a position to make the deals- such a wheeler dealer, LOL! Musk can assist by carrying out his idiotic we-will-primary-you threat, but it will explode the party. Senile, in poor health, and bending the knee to kiss Elon Musk's ... well, not a good look, Donnie, no, not at all..

I have been pleasantly surprised and relieved by the look.

Still looking for the man's early death with perhaps a prelude of obvious drooling.

Nope. Speakers are questioned.

Speakers are questioned.

That, and he can't fire anyone.

Maybe you're all right. But Speaker Johnson defied a direct order from Trump to shut down the government. Regardless of all the friendly smiles, defying Trump is a death wish. Apparently, Johnson made a handshake deal, a trade off, to make deep cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and veterans benefits in March . . . plus raise the retirement age for Social Security benefits. I doubt that will placate Trump, though. What he really wanted was the propaganda value of hurting the economy while still on Biden's watch.

I have a feeling Johnson is in for a nasty backstab. Trump never forgets and never forgives.

#18 | Posted by Twinpac at 2024-12-22 12:01 PM

I have a feeling Johnson is in for a nasty backstab.

Absolutely, but Senior Co-President Elon will not be his replacement. He'd never be able to preside over than glacially paced, mindless drivel.

Lewzer would just put some other idiot in there instead. He still needs a spot for Joe Rogan. Or Empty G... she would be a hoot. Hannity? Rittenhouse?

#19 | Posted by REDIAL at 2024-12-22 12:11 PM

Against all odds, Hulk Hogan is still available.

I mean, how could Trump pass on, 'Hogan's Heroes of the House' as a new tv series/legislature?

#20 | Posted by Corky at 2024-12-22 12:28 PM

Realistically speaking, Trump needs a pit bull as a House Speaker to start banging heads together. I'm thinking Matt Gaetz (consolation prize) but I'm not sure if he could pass the smell test when it comes down to a vote.

#21 | Posted by Twinpac at 2024-12-22 07:25 PM

One thing to keep in mind during this discussion about Speaker Johnson's future, or non-future, as Speaker ...

There's a timeline involved ...

January 3, the new Congress convenes.

January 6, the Election results need to be validated.

OK, if the Republicans who come into power on January 3 remove Speaker Johnson from the Speaker position, how long will it take for a new Speaker to be accepted by the Republican majority?

And, if I may ask, can the Election results be validated by the House if there is no Speaker?

#22 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-12-22 07:38 PM

LAMP

As to both questions I'd think that removing or keeping Speaker Johnson would be the first order of business.

If there's a challenger, I seem to recall that the party leaders have a meeting before anything comes up to a vote.

I suppose there could be a Speaker pro temp, such as the current Deputy Speaker if the party leaders can't come to a decision . . . or the unlikelihood nobody is willing to accept the job.

#17 Redial Besides why put someone in as SOH when he can't be president ever. SOH is 3rd in line of succesion for the presidency.

#24 | Posted by Ronnie68 at 2024-12-23 04:43 PM

SOH is 3rd in line of succesion for the presidency.

True, but being able to serve as President does not seem to be a job requirement for Speaker like it is for Vice-President.
