Trump is looking for an "off-ramp" after advisers became concerned at Iran's ability to hit United States bases across the Middle East and kill American troops in retaliation for any military intervention, such as the targeting of nuclear facilities with bunker-busting bombs.

Pres Trump seemed to get so hepped up over the FoxNews coverage of the initial Israeli raids on Iran. He seemed to go to bed against striking Iran, but then in the morning (after watching FoxNews' obsequious coverage of Israel's successful bombing of targets in Iran?) he seemed to want to place himself in the picture.

I readily admit, that the agreement I proffered in @2 was based upon an assumption (and, likely not a good one) that Pres Trump is able to think rationally.

That aside, Pres Trump not showing his hand at this stage is a good tactic.

Does he have a strategy to back up this tactical maneuver to obfuscate?

I wish I knew. But based upon his past actions ...
