It is unclear where the Treasury Department, which did not comment for this story, stands on the proposal.

Already, the industry is pushing back out of concern that the potential move -- via presidential order, not legislation -- would be costly and complicated to implement. Illicit finance laws require financial institutions to collect some personal information on their customers, but not citizenship details specifically.

The SAVE act (of which voter ID requirement is a small, but overly emphasized, part) would require the States to turn over to Sec Noem's DHS all data the States have on their voters.

The SAVE Act is not even reimbursing States for the significant expense they face in order to comply.

Also, the passport requirement is seen as a poll tax by many who do not have a passport.

"The USA PATRIOT Act Customer Identification Program (CIP), mandated by Section 326 of the 2001 Act, requires financial institutions to implement reasonable, written, risk-based procedures to verify the identity of any person or entity opening a new account. Institutions must collect name, address, date of birth, and identification numbers (TIN/SSN) to check against terrorist lists and maintain records"

So,if they have no ID number,they open an account. If they have an ID number, it's easy to verify status.

Fake number is fraud. Use someone else's? Stolen ID.
