Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, August 27, 2024

I don't know how much crossover there is between the Drudge Retort and hardcore science fiction readers, but I'm one of the volunteers for the Self-Published Science Fiction Competition (SPSFC), an effort to find the best SF novel that was published by the author instead of a traditional publisher. We're looking for judges for the fourth SPSFC, so if you might be interested click the link for details.

Brandon Sanderson self-publishes his books (and games)using Kickstarter... if that's actually self-publishing?

Loved his early books like Elantris and Mistborn.

I guess crowdfunding counts as self-publishing when the author runs the whole project.

He raked in a massive amount of money that way.

Yeah... I still don't know exactly how that werks, but it looks like to me people are paying for the books twice, so I haven't read any of his new stuff.

I didn't know that about Brandon Sanderson. We get his books at the library. They are really quite good.
Currently reading Between Earth and Sky trilogy by Rebecca Roanhorse. Probably doesn't count as it is published by Saga Press.
Older but classic is Otavia Butler, lots of gender bending and great genetic themes.

The crowdfund donors get the book for their donation, so they don't have to buy it when it is released generally.

#5 Thanks!

I'm going to suppose that a penny donation won't get me a book, lol.

But if it's the same price as the book, that seems fair.
