... Security talks among the northern allies are needed because they don't meet privately at the political level anymore, partly due to Russia's presence on the Arctic Council, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said. The Nordics are now all NATO members after Sweden's accession earlier this year.

"For a long time Canada, we thought we were protected by our geography. But now we need to reckon that we are a country facing Russia and because of climate change, more countries are interested in the Arctic, including China," she said in an interview with Bloomberg News. "We need to be addressing this new reality."

Canada has pledged to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and China's growing interest in the far north, shattered its sense of security in its vast northern territories. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government is also trying to prove to the US that it's a reliable partner on defense, especially as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump places a heavy emphasis on allies paying their share of security costs.

Joly met last weekend with her counterparts from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in Iqaluit, the capital of Canada's northern territory of Nunavut. They agreed to explore ways to create a so-called "Arctic security dialogue" or a new forum to discuss defense matters, Joly said. ...

We can add Alaska to the places like Finland and Poland that Vlad wants to invade and take over.

His excuse will be that America underpaid for it originally.

EffetePooter will condemn US actions in 1800's Hawaii as the reason Vlad is justified in targeting civilians in Anchorage.

Climate change in the Arctic is a wake-up call for the Global South
dialogue.earth

... n September 1846, the British expeditionary ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror became stranded in the Canadian Arctic while navigating the Northwest Passage, a shipping corridor between Europe and Asia. Eventually frozen in on all sides, the crew hoped to break free of the ice the following summer, but it did not retreat one iota. Every crew member eventually perished.

One hundred and seventy years later, Crystal Cruises made history by sailing a large cruise liner through the Northwest Passage for the first time.

Arctic melting has become widespread and is intensifying every year. As stated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2019, the extent of Arctic sea ice is steadily declining as the years pass by, with the most significant contractions (typically reached every September) unprecedented during the past 1,000 years at least. The glaciers of Greenland, the largest ice mass in the Northern Hemisphere, have lost a third of their volume since 1978.

So, why does the accelerated thaw of an inhospitable and distant place, where the night lasts six months, and to which most people will probably never go, matter?

The simplest answer is what happens in the north also affects the south. Climate change in the Arctic carries planetary risks. ...

Russia One Step Closer' to Year-Round Sailing in Melting Arctic (2021)
www.themoscowtimes.com

... A powerful Russian icebreaker has crossed the Northern Sea Route for the first time at this time of year as ice coverage shrinks in the rapidly melting Arctic.

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Christophe de Margerie made it through the Chukchi Sea and into the Bering Strait on Saturday, Jan. 16, after 10 days in thick sea ice.

"It is a historical day for the development of the Northern Sea Route and national shipping," Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev said Monday.

He said the voyage, which shows the shipping route can be used for an extra one to two months every year, is "a step toward year-round commercial shipments on the route." ...

@#5

Is that what the GOP is going for with their climate change stance?

Allowing Russia's LNG industry to have year-round delivery routes?

These people are always conniving on playing one up-mans-ship and how to divide not just the USA but the world when they only speculate and do not actually know facts. Sorry but a zillion years of destructive wars making the deep state rich makes me skeptical when I read this stuff. Climate is always changing and so is weather. Seems we need to work together instead of always colluding to outmaneuver. It never works for most.
