For the good of humanity Carter allowed himself to be exposed to far more radiation than any modern doctor would say was safe. Yet he lived passed the age of 100. This sounds like the start of a work of fiction but it really did happen.

On Jimmy Carter and Nuclear Power. Jimmy Carter was a nuclear engineer. He helped rescue Canada when an experimental reactor underwent partial meltdown. He had considerable expertise in the field of nuclear reactors. He was deeply concerned about proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The navy traditionally named aircraft carriers after presidents or senior naval officers and submarines after cities or states. They made an exception for Jimmy.
