The federal process isn't as simple as crossing out the old name and writing in a new one. It's a complicated switch across the bureaucracy, involving a top-down effort to update official documents, communications, maps, and charts.

Google announced that it will rename it "Gulf of America" and also will rename Denali as "Mt. McKinley" once the US Government updates their documents.

I heard from a friend that the reason for renaming the Gulf of Mexico is because Trump believes that all treaties and laws that apply to the Gulf of Mexico will no longer be enforceable with the name change. That will open up "drill baby, drill" throughout the Gulf. Anyone else heard this? It sounds like nonsense to me.
