The Trump administration claims gutting federal agencies will save money, but cutting the IRS means the government collects less taxes. "If you're interested in the deficit and curbing it, why would you cut back on the revenue side?" one expert asks.

... Dave Nershi was finalizing a report he'd worked on for months when an ominous email appeared in his inbox.

Nershi had worked as a general engineer for the Internal Revenue Service for about nine months. He was one of hundreds of specialists inside the IRS who used their technical expertise -- Nershi's background is in chemical and nuclear engineering -- to audit byzantine tax returns filed by large corporations and wealthy individuals.

Until recently, the IRS had a shortage of these experts, and many complex tax returns went unscrutinized. With the help of people like Nershi, the IRS could recoup millions and sometimes more than a billion dollars on a single tax return.

But on Feb. 20, three months shy of finishing his probationary period and becoming a full-time employee, the IRS fired him. As a Navy veteran, Nershi loved working in public service and had hoped he might be spared from any mass firings.

The unsigned email said he'd been fired for performance, even though he had received high marks from his manager. ...

"The unsigned email said he'd been fired for performance"

The Doge-bags should be summarily fired, and sued.

DOGE's slaughter of the IRS looks to me to have one, and only one purpose ...

Cripple the IRS's ability to audit (and possibly, collect money from) high-income tax cheats.

"Cripple the IRS's ability to audit (and possibly, collect money from) high-income tax cheats."

That's absolutely their plan.

If they didn't have a lackey in charge, he'd horde the money for the new computer system, and the high-end division.

And folks to answer phones...PLEASE! We went over a decade where roughly 4 of 5 calls went unanswered...and with the recent money it FINALLY turned around. That will all change back to crap.

Call me crazy, but the MINIMAL amount of service is to be able to answer the question HOW DO I HONESTLY FILE AND PAY MY INCOME TAXES?

@#4 ... Call me crazy, ...

OK, you may be crazy.

But not for the reason you may think.

... the MINIMAL amount of service is to be able to answer the question HOW DO I HONESTLY FILE AND PAY MY INCOME TAXES? ...

Well, yeah.

That is the crazy aspect of this.

Pres Trump seems to be aiding those high-income people who apparently intentionally want to avoid taxes, at the detriment of the honest workers who want to pay their fair share.

It only seems that way because Pres Trump IS aiding those high-income people who apparently intentionally want to avoid taxes, at the detriment of the honest workers who want to pay their fair share.

No other reason.

Keep in mind: all "worry" about the debt and deficit is horse manure. They want to cut $1 Trillion in government spending, AND THEN CUT FOUR TIMES THAT MUCH IN GOVERNMENT REVENUE.

Where are all the Republican deficit hawks??? Was your concern fake ALL ALONG???
