The US has selected a design for the futuristic "Golden Dome" missile defence system, says US President Donald Trump, adding that it will be operational by the end of his time in office. An initial sum of $25bn (18.7bn) has been earmarked in a new budget bill - although the government has estimated it will end up costing much more than that over decades.

Trump said on Tuesday that the programme would require an initial investment of $25bn, with a total cost of $175bn over time. The initial $25bn has been identified within his One Big Beautiful Bill on tax, which has not yet been passed. The Congressional Budget Office, however, has estimated that the government could ultimately spend more, up to $542bn over 20 years, on the space-based parts of the system alone.

Canada wants to join Golden Dome missile-defence program, Trump says missile defence system
www.cbc.ca

... Donald Trump says Canada has asked to join the missile-defence program his administration is building, adding a new chapter to a long-running cross-border saga.

The U.S. president dropped that news in the Oval Office on Tuesday as he unveiled the initial plans for a three-year, $175 billion US project to build a multi-purpose missile shield he's calling the Golden Dome.

"Canada has called us and they want to be a part of it," Trump said. "They want to hook in and they want to be a part of it."

Canada will pay its "fair share," he added. "We'll work with them on pricing."

Ottawa confirmed it's talking to the U.S. about this.

In a statement, the federal government cast missile-defence discussions as part of the overall trade and security negotiations Prime Minister Mark Carney is having with Trump.

What this means is still extremely murky.

It's unclear what, exactly, Canada would contribute; what its responsibilities would include; what it would pay; and how different this arrangement would be from what Canada already does under the Canada-U.S. NORAD system. ...

@#2 ... What this means is still extremely murky. ...

Well, yeah.

Given Pres Trump's actions over the past month or so, what the Trump regime says is happening, and what is actually happening seems to be two different things.

Time will tell here ...

In the right thread this time:

I heard a bit of a Trump press conference today.
The Senator from Indiana was saying how great the tariffs are for the Indiana economy.
Trump named some states that will benefit bigly from his Golden Dome, they were all Red states.
Trump thinks he can win a nuclear war with his Golden Orange Dome. Republicans seem to think so too.

"Canada will pay its "fair share," he added. "We'll work with them on pricing.""

Wow. Treating diplomacy like a sales opportunity. International cooperation that is pursued not for mutual security and common defense, but because Trump can get something favorable on "pricing."

Stumbled upon this ...

Trump selects $175 billion Golden Dome defense shield design, appoints leader
www.reuters.com

... President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he had selected a design for the $175-billion Golden Dome missile defense shield and named a Space Force general to head the ambitious program aimed at blocking threats from China and Russia. ...

Wait, what?

Pres Trump selected the design?

What leaks in that design has Pres Trump put in place to allow for Pres Putin to ~tap in?~

Like Pres Trump apparently decided the security needs of the documents he took to Mar-A-Lago?

Pres Trump selected the design?

I'm surprised he didn't claim to have designed it himself.

The Senator from Indiana was sucking up so hard. He said it was genius how President Trump came up with a layered defense that has missiles on the ground but we're also going up into space.

So, the militarization of space is officially the policy of the human race, led there by the United States.

And some people think that's a good thing!

@#5 ... Wow. Treating diplomacy like a sales opportunity. ...

Well, yeah, that seems to be Pres Trump modus operandi.

Everything is a business transaction.

My Dad once told me, and I have lived by the comment all my life, never try to make money off your friends.

Friendship is special.

From what it seems, Pres Trump does not seem to have any personal friends. Only those who apparently try to buy his favor.
