The milestone called for the epic vision of a JFK or the soaring oratory of a Barack Obama. Instead it got a Trump rally.

f that's the way America celebrates its birthday, you would not want to be present at its funeral. The shining city on a hill is losing some of its lustre these days.

The land that promised life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is struggling to deliver.

A milestone anniversary like 250 years of independence calls for the epic vision of a John F Kennedy, the immaculate timing of a Ronald Reagan or the soaring oratory of a Barack Obama.

What it got instead on Wednesday was an 80-year-old convicted criminal who appeared in Home Alone 2 and seems hellbent on dividing the nation.

"But most dismal of all was the way in which the president, whose war in Iran has pushed consumer prices to a three-year high and his approval rating to new lows, turned a national celebration " and potential moment of unity " into just another Trump campaign rally."

"Any lingering doubt that this was a Trump rally was banished when it ended with audience members rising to their feet to join him in proclaiming: "Make America great again," followed by the president breaking into his signature dance as the US Marine Band played the Village People's YMCA.

Only Donald Trump could make the nation's special birthday all about him. There is another party " with big fireworks " to come on the National Mall on 4 July. "Your favourite president will be speaking, so please show up," Trump implored, sounding like Jeb Bush begging:

"Please clap." Sounding, in fact, like a lame duck."

This is going to be the suckiest Fourth of July in my lifetime, and likely in the History of the United States.

I understand that MAGA walked away from Trump's speech yesterday because they could not buy beer, as advertised.

That's Donald Trump: lying about the freaking beer.

"the president breaking into his signature dance as the US Marine Band played the Village People's YMCA"

Donald Trump is so damned full of himself that he can no longer perceive when he humiliates himself and humiliates the country.

"suckiest Fourth of July"

The fences ruin it for me. Not that I'd ever go in this political climate.

The entire point of going downtown D.C. for the fireworks is to hang out on The Mall by the Reflecting Pool. I went enough times in high school to see it "evolve" to the point where the Park Police had to ban students from nearby colleges from bringing couches with them. You'd see frat guys carrying a couch down the street, then leaving it behind after the show.

I don't know how fenced off the Reflecting Pool is going to be, but that's just dumb. Who wants to see newly erected failure fences while celebrating The Land Of The Free? Just an ugly analogy for what Republicans are doing to our nation.

... A viral video appearing to show attendees leaving President Donald Trump's speech midway through his remarks is spreading widely online, prompting debate over crowd engagement at the event.

A clip shared on social media platform X, which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times, appears to show people walking toward exits during Trump's June 24 speech on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Newsweek analysis of official C-SPAN footage from the event found the widely shared moment corresponds to 9:08 p.m. local time"roughly halfway through the speech, not near its conclusion.

A separate post from Jared Poland, who was reporting live from the event on the ground, said: "The crowd has really thinned out since Trump began speaking around 8:50pm." ...
