At a BBQ this past weekend someone couldn't make it, so the three of us didn't play cards after the delicious repast. No sweat: Plenty of "wine, women, and song" to go around. Fitutzing around at the TV set to find "song," my friend came accoss Copland on the screen. "I never saw that," he remarked. "Me too," chimed my second companion. "Really?" asked I. Breaking a personal rule, I suggested that the three of us watch this star-studded gritty tale of redemption, vengeance, racism, philandering, the mafia, and corruption within the NYPD. Needless to say, my friends were thoroughly entertained. The slightly long Copland contains subtle and not-so subtle homages to other films and works, to include Stalag 13, Hamlet, It's a Wonderful Life, High Noon, The Bonfire of the Vanities, and The Gauntlet.
