Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, March 24, 2025

The head of the beleaguered U.S. Postal Service, Louis DeJoy, resigned Monday after nearly five years in the position, leaving as President Donald Trump and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency have floated the idea of privatizing mail service. DeJoy had said last month he planned to step down but hadn't set a date. He leaves an agency with an uncertain future. Trump has said he is considering putting USPS under the control of the Commerce Department in an attempt to stop losses at the $78 billion-a-year agency, which has operated as an independent entity since 1970. It has struggled at times to balance the books with the decline of first-class mail.

Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will take on the role until the Postal Service Board of Governors names a permanent replacement for DeJoy, who became postmaster general in the summer of 2020 during Trump's first term. He was a Republican donor who owned a logistics business and was the first person to hold the position in nearly two decades who was not a career postal employee.

... Postmaster General Louis DeJoy recently delivered remarks at the 2023 Concordia United States Summit in Cary, NC. DeJoy highlighted how he has leveraged his private sector background to reshape and strengthen the U.S. Postal Service, the nation's most trusted agency. Following his remarks, DeJoy was interviewed by Michelle Giuda, CEO of the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue University.

"It's about innovation. It's about a commitment to work and precision. It's about competing in a marketplace ... and getting a competitive advantage on everything around you," DeJoy said in response to a question from Giuda about his approach to leading USPS.

DeJoy's remarks focused on how the Postal Service is continuing to transform and improve operating practices across the organization. During the session with Giuda, he discussed how he has worked to address legacy financial issues at the organization, and highlighted how the Postal Service has invested in new technologies to improve the delivery of mail and packages, including new sorting machines and modern and efficient delivery vehicles.

The 2023 Concordia United States Summit took place Nov. 7 and focused on delivering action-oriented solutions to advance national priorities in key areas such as trade, manufacturing and supply chains.

At this point, the Postal Service I see is the same, or possibly worse, than when Mr DeJoy took the helm.

So, what did he really accomplish?

Besides, that is, [intentionally] making more reasons to privatize the USPS?
