The crisis unfolding in southwest Alaska has drawn attention to Trump administration cuts to grants aimed at helping small, mostly Indigenous villages prepare for storms or mitigate disaster risks.
"Kipnuk isn't Kipnuk anymore. I pray they evacuate safely." - Kristy Fox, resident of Kipnuk wrote on Facebook after being evacuated by the U.S. Coast Guard with her family.
Roughly 600 people are still sheltering there at the local school and 400 people still in Kwigillingok, as of Tuesday.
