Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Milan Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into a chilling case that recalls the infamous Sniper Alley of Sarajevo " the city besieged from 1992 to 1996 by Serb-Bosnian militias during the Bosnian War. From the surrounding hills, they shot at passersby who had no choice but to cross that street and expose themselves to being killed. It is estimated that more than 11,000 civilians were murdered in this way. The investigation, revealed by Italian media, concerns an alleged crime of intentional homicide aggravated by cruelty and vile motives. Its central thesis is that some Italians paid to go to Sarajevo for the weekend and shoot at people, as if it were a hunting trip. Ordinary citizens, with ties to far-right circles and passionate about weapons, allegedly hired this service as a kind of human safari in the besieged city.

That sounds pretty deplorable.

Completely believable allegation. Having served in Bosnia as part of the Dayton Peace Accord (DPA), as well as other parts of the Balkans, I came across a deep network of organized crime that crosses ethnic lines which continues to persist today. When I discuss war crimes perpetrated by Benjamin Netanyahu or Vladimir Putin, I am writing from the experiences I gained in the Balkans.

In Rwanda, I learned how to calculate genocide casualties with pen and paper. My predictions for the Palestinians killed in Gaza have been quite accurate. And in much less time, the IDF surpassed Bosnian Muslim massacre victims killed between 1992 and 1995.

And seeing the exact spot where the "Romeo and Juliet of Sarajevo" were mercilessly gunned down by a Bosnian Serb sniper is absolutely heart-wrenching. The poor couple was given a safe conduct pass by the Bosnian Serbs to leave Sarajevo.
