Squatters' rights are an ANCIENT part of common law. And they exist for a VERY good reason.
If you've abandoned a property, it's not contributing to the community, to the economy, to society. "Your" property is in fact a detriment to all of the above.
It takes YEARS, and in many cases DECADES for a squatter to get ownership of a property. That's far more than enough safeguard from arbitrary taking, the reality is that we should be taxing vacant properties at FAR higher rates than occupied properties, and we should be shortening the time for squatters to take possession.
Now, I'm not talking about your cabin in the woods, but even that should require you occupy it for at least one day a year to not be taxed as unoccupied property. But in a city? Property left vacant for more than 3 months should be subject to 10x to 100x taxation, depending on housing affordability in that community. And squatters rights should be five years residence or less to obtain ownership.
Oh, you can't find a renter for the rate you want? Cut the rate, or pay the unoccupied tax. Oh, you only visit your vacation home for one month a year? Then 9 months a year pay the unoccupied tax. Didn't bother checking on your vacation house for 5 years and somebody squatted in it? Not yours any more.
Meh. So you drive a stick. Good for you. I bet you think vinyl sounds 'warmer' too.
I can drive a stick. I just see no reason whatsoever to do so unless I absolutely have to. It's not pleasant, it's not fun, it's just extra unnecessary drudgery added to the drudgery of driving.
If I want fun on the road, I've got a motorcycle.
