Food pantry lines grow as SNAP recipients wait for their benefits to restart
pix11.com

... Tens of millions of food stamp recipients will now get partial funding across the New York region for November after the Trump administration was ordered by a federal court to release some funds.

On Monday, Attorney General Letitia James says food pantry lines across New York are growing longer by the day, as SNAP recipients wait for their benefits to restart.

She spent Monday evening serving meals at a Brooklyn church, meeting families who depend on SNAP benefits.

"The problem has gotten worse as a result of the cuts to SNAP," said James.

Just days ago, James and 24 other states sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture, accusing it of unlawfully halting benefits during the government shutdown. A judge has now ordered partial funding, meaning recipients will get only about half their usual monthly amount -- for now.

"The problem is operationalizing, getting the funds to these EBT cards. They tell me it's going to take 10 - 12 days to upload the federal funds so that individuals can purchase food." ...

... Even as the Trump administration has agreed to provide partial food stamp payments for November, food banks and food pantries are busier than usual in what's usually a busy month.

And no one is sure how soon those partial payments will arrive, though the undersecretary of the Department of Agriculture said in a court filing that in some cases, it could be weeks or months.

The bottom line for thousands of families, including the 1 in 20 in Utah who rely on food stamps for at least part of their food, is uncertainty about the future and no benefits at the moment. ...

Donald Trump's Joke' About Corey Comperatore Sparks Outrage (August 2024)
www.newsweek.com

... Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's comment about Corey Comperatore, the firefighter who was shot and killed during an attempt on his life last month, has drawn outrage online.

At a Harrisburg rally Wednesday night, Trump spoke about the more than $6 million that had been raised through a GoFundMe page set up for Comperatore's family since the shooting, also mentioning Florida attorney Dan Newlin, who donated $1 million to the family.

He then said: "But you know what? Corey's wife said, 'I'd rather have my husband.' Isn't that good? I know a lot of wives who would not say that. I'm sorry, they would not say that."

Trump continued: "But no, it's a great family. He was a great man. He was a brave man. He saw what was happening and he jumped on top." ...

Americans dumbfounded by cruelty' of Trump officials slashing Snap benefits
www.theguardian.com

... Across the country, Americans who depend on government help to buy groceries are preparing for the worst.

As a result of the ongoing federal government shutdown, Donald Trump has threatened to, for the first time in the program's more than 60-year history, cut off benefits provided by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (Snap). A federal judge last week prevented the US Department of Agriculture from suspending Snap altogether, but the Trump administration now says enrollees will receive only half of their usual benefits.

The Guardian wanted to know how important Snap was to the approximately 42 million people enrolled in the program. Many of those who responded to our callout were elderly, or out of the workforce because of significant mental of physical health issues, and worried that a cutoff of the benefit would send their lives into a tailspin.

"I am housebound because I need a couple of spinal cord surgeries so this is really gonna hurt me because I cannot work, and thereby earn money to put food on the table," said Taras Stratelak, a retiree in southern California. ...
