" Former President Donald Trump said Thursday he won't debate Vice President Kamala Harris a second time, drawing criticism from Democrats after he was put on the defensive during Tuesday's showdown. Making his announcement in a Truth Social post, Trump blamed both Harris and President Joe Biden; Trump and Biden faced off June 27 before the incumbent dropped out of the race and Harris ascended to the top of the ticket. Harris had a low-key response, telling supporters at a campaign stop in North Carolina "we owe it to the voters to have another debate." Harris' campaign called for another Trump-Harris debate just minutes after the Tuesday debate ended.
Self-anointed south suburban "supermayor" Tiffany Henyard knows how to throw a party. She flew in R&B singer Keke Wyatt and rapper J. Holiday for a mini-concert last month for the "Taste of Thornton Township." But the event, which Henyard's own social media videos show was sparsely attended, has left some residents with a sour taste. "That was a flop," said former Dolton trustee Valeria Stubbs who went to see the spectacle for herself. WGN Investigates filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act for expenses related to the one day event. Records show Keke Wyatt was paid $30,000 to sing for 30 minutes. J. Holiday was paid $20,000 for a half-hour set. The township spent $6,600 to rent inflatable bounce houses. Other costs billed to township taxpayers include everything from comedians to a sound system, staff to equipment and bring the total to at least $85,769. read more
New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban is expected to resign Thursday amid a federal investigation into the department's nightclub enforcement, according to five sources familiar with the matter. Caban, the city's first Latino police commissioner, had been leading the department since July 2023. He was tapped for the job by Mayor Eric Adams, whose administration is the target of multiple federal investigations. Spokespersons for Adams and the NYPD did not respond to requests for comment. Caban's phone was seized last week around the same time that FBI agents raided the homes of top Adams administration officials as part of a separate probe. Those whose homes were searched included First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks III. read more

It's hard to get 42 states to agree on much. But a bipartisan group of attorneys general on Tuesday demanded that Congress require Surgeon General warning labels on social media apps to help curtail addiction and a mental health crisis among young adults. "As state Attorneys General, we sometimes disagree about important issues, but all of us share an abiding concern for the safety of the kids in our jurisdictions " and algorithm-driven social media platforms threaten that safety," the 42 attorneys general said in a letter to Congress. read more
