I graduated high school in 1985 and don't remember even a fleeting moment where I feared somebody might shoot up the school.

There was some fear that a kid might bring a gun and shoot themselves. That happened in a school near mine in an incident that inspired the Pearl Jam song "Jeremy."

Even beyond the immediate victims of a shooting, the fear of them is doing huge damage to students and parents. Most parents I know have exchanged texts with their school-age child after reports of a gun in or near their campus.

People are going to say nothing can be done, but of course that isn't true. If it was this wouldn't be a huge problem in the United States and a nearly non-existent problem elsewhere.

Graduated in 1975. The song "I don't like Mondays" didn't come out until 1979 and was the first time I even considered a school shooting.

The thought of someone bringing a gun to school in 1973-5 was unheard of. It was not even a concern. We were more concerned with issues surrounding segregation in my county which had become law only 10 years or so previous and still in its early stages.

The thought of minors having unsupervised access to guns at all was unheard of. All the guns I was aware of were locked up in gun cabinets and I hardly ever saw them and only brought out by adults to go hunting. And were not left out available for children to have access to for obvious reasons and we didn't question it. No one walked around in public with rifles or handguns. Except criminals or law enforcement. Or the military. And even in the military I wasn't even allowed bullets unless it was absolutely required.

When I was in college (this was in northern Michigan) in the mid-60's, we had gun lockers in the dorm. Now we had to keep all our guns and ammo in the lockers (I had a rifle and a shotgun) and if we needed to clean or repair our guns, it had to be done in the gun room, where they provided a workbench, complete with a vise and a place to work. The university also had an indoor shooting range and we used to go down by the lake to shoot clay pigeons (I had a hand-trap, which I also kept in my gun locker).

And for the record, I've still got several long guns at home and a substantial amount of ammo, but everything is always locked in my gun safe. Also for the record, I'm a bleeding-heart Liberal who has always been around guns (I got my first rifle when I was nine-years old) but we were taught that guns were dangerous and that you never left them unlocked, particularly when children were around. I'm not saying that we need to do away with the 2nd Amendment, but there's nothing in it to prevent Congress from passing stronger gun laws, including universal background checks, and some consideration in limiting access to certain types and classification of guns. I was 14-years old when I went hunting for the first time with what could be considered a high-powered rifle. And when I was in the Army Reserves I had to qualify on what was a true assault rifle and while I was impressed by it's lethality, I would have never considered it as something that I would have taken into the woods during deer season. Not only would it have been 'overkill', it was also something that would have been inappropriate and out of place, at least back when I was still hunting (I've not actually been hunting in a couple of decades).

What makes you think they would care?

The founding fathers would probably be aghast about women and Black people having any rights. They'd be furious Minorities are in the government and positions of power.

On the other hand, considering they all wore makeup and wigs in order to cover up their horrible hygiene and health issues, they would be confused at all the drag hate. After all, they were the original kings of drag.

There one thing for sure, none of them would vote for a brown Southeast Asian, Caribbean woman for president. They'd sooner hang her.

Stop romanticizing the founding fathers. They were just a bunch of rich guys who didn't want the British government taking their money.

The fact is that it was only recently in our history that the 2nd Amendment was NRA'd...

""A fraud on the American public."

That's how former Chief Justice Warren Burger described the idea that the Second Amendment gives an unfettered individual right to a gun.

Good on the SRO for quick action.

But the GOP is delusional if they think a generation of kids experiencing this will be kind to them:

The words "hard lockdown" appeared on a screen in junior Layla Ferrell's health class and lights began flashing. She and her frightened classmates piled desks and chairs in front of the door to create a barricade, she recalled.

Sophomore Kaylee Abner was in geometry class when she heard the gunshots. She and her classmates ducked behind their teacher's desk, and then the teacher began flipping the desk in an attempt to barricade the classroom door, Abner said. A classmate beside her was praying, and she held his hand while they all waited for police.

You are nibbling around edges. It is already against the law for a 14 year old to possess and use what was used in this shooting.

Trying to blame me is incredibly weak sauce. 2A exists. Period. None of what you likely want to happen can't until 2A is repealed via an amendment.

#94 | Posted by BellRinger at 2024-09-05 03:18 AM | Reply

The second amendment is a red herring.
it neither helps nor hinders what just happened, and im not suggesting we repeal it before you go there.

the parents being irresponsible gun owners and not locking up their weapons is the problem. people being more concerned with their "rights" instead of their responsibilities is another one.

start prosecuting these ------- gun owners that allow teenagers access to guns. reinstate the brady bill, maybe do some gun buy backs.

these are all possibilities but your answer is "the senate wont pass them" so i have to ask you why they will not do that.

So far, it looks like the possession of the firearm by a 14 year old was already illegal.

So, a lack of enforcement? I read today (but haven't verified) that the FBI was flaggged a year ago that this kid was a serious risk and that the school received a call threatening this would happen and no counter measured were taken. also note that news reporting during the first 24 hours of something like this is historically unreliable.

Not saying you sidn't read that but I really would like to know where you read it because it really is hard to believe that the FBI contacted that school and their warning was completely ignored but if it was serious consequences should befall those who were contacted. I would think that a warning from the FBI would have gotten someone's attention.
Also, i only heard a few minutes ago about the weapon used in this shooting and SURPRISE! it was an AR style rifle AGAIN! Gun nuts don't want any restrictions on the type of weapons sold so I suggest that if you buy an AR style rifle and it gets into the hands of some angry teenage boy the the owner needs to face serious criminal charges.

So we now know that the FBI had him on their radar in 2023 as someone who made posts about wanting to shoot up a school.
We also know that the school received a warning call yesterday morning about what was to come.

Kamala Harris: Let's ban guns!

Once again our intel agencies failed at their jobs. The school failed to take action and deemed the threat unworthy of following up on, but somehow passing legislation to ban certain firearms is going to fix this.

And Gracie is correct. More people are gunned down every weekend in Chicago than what we have here but NEVER will we see a headline banner every Monday morning acknowledging it. Puzzling, isn't it?

"Once again our intel agencies failed at their jobs. The school failed to take action and deemed the threat unworthy of following up on, but somehow passing legislation to ban certain firearms is going to fix this."

The FBI did its job by contacting the local police:

The FBI said its National Threat Operations Center had alerted local law enforcement in May 2023 after receiving anonymous tips about "online threats to commit a school shooting at an unidentified location and time".

The agency said that within 24 hours investigators had determined that the threats originated in Georgia.

Sheriff's deputies interviewed the boy and his father, who "stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them", the FBI said.

The suspect, who was 13 years old at the time, denied making the online threats and officials "alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject".

"At the time, there was no probable cause for an arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action on the local, state or federal levels," added the FBI statement.

What did you want the FBI to do? You can't arrest someone for wanting something. And you idiots made taking guns away nearly impossible. Plus you can't take other people's guns away, like his parents' guns, because the kid has issues.

As for local law enforcement, yep. They dropped the ball. But likely they get these calls constantly. What did you want them to do? Send 10 officers to each of the 20 schools in the area each time there is a call?

But yes, let's talk about Chicago that has a lower per capita gun violence rate than places like Georgia and where nearly all the firearm homicides are committed with guns bought across the border in red states.

IMO, if someone wants to own a weapon capable of firing multiple rounds without re-loading they should be automatically enlisted in their state's National Guard (well regulated militia) for as long as they own the weapon(s).

In all other cases, gun ownership should be limited, per Originalist intent and capability (right SCOTUS), to as many single shot flintlock muzzle loaders they care to own.

Where did the shooter get the gun? Was it one of the guns his father said he used for hunting and which he said Colt didn't have unsupervised access too?

If we want to start pointing fingers, in addition to the shooter himself, we can blame the father, the school, the county sheriff, local, state and federal politicians as well as that part of our society that glorifies gun culture. My 2 cents.

Reality: "Ok. Laws should require safe storage with trigger locks and a gun safe."
Jeff: "NO! YOU CAN'T VIOLATE THE 2ND AMENDMENT!" *frothing at the mouth*
Reality: "Ok. So what should we do?"
Jeff: "Send 10 officers to each of the schools every time there is a gun threat."
Reality: "There aren't enough officers to cover all 20 schools and these calls happen every couple weeks."
Jeff: "Put an armed resource officer in each school."
Reality: "They had that."
Jeff: "It's a mental health issue."
Reality: "He was getting mental health treatment."
Jeff: "He didn't get the guns legally so obviously our gun laws don't work."
Reality: "We have very weak gun laws so there are guns everywhere that he had access to."

Never worked in the school system I take it? Large school districts get these types of random calls constantly.

What did you want law enforcement to do? Send officers every one of the 20 schools every time there is a call, threat or rumor? They'd be pulling in officers from counties away to do this.

There are far far far more guns now with easier access for everyone.
They are more readily available to large numbers of students in suburban and urban areas that didn't have access before.
The guns now are far more deadly and hold more rounds.
The guns have been idolized culturally.
And school shootings are copycat phenomena. (This is a huge problem caused in part by social media and news sites)

Not how it works unfortunately.

If handguns were just as good, why are these shootings nearly always carried out with AR-15s or less commonly another assault rifle?

These shooters are looking to create an image, to strike terror for usually feeling left out or bullied, etc. It's about looking tough, not just killing.

A handgun doesn't conjure up that image for them. It's seen as a self defense weapon, not a mass shooting weapon. It doesn't strike the same fear. No one feels like Rambo with a glock or a hunting rifle.

But if a handgun and assault rifle can do the same thing, then what's the problem banning assault rifles? You just said you don't need them anyway.

I have a handgun and an AR-15. I love my AR-15 at the range. But I also don't have kids and it has a trigger lock. I don't keep ammo at home for it. And if a burglar is trying to break in, my first thought would be the handgun. And if we have to get rid of assault rifles, I'd be fine with that.

I propose mandatory death sentence for anyone whose gun is used in a crime. If your kid gets a hold of your gun and shoots up a school then it's the chair for you. If you don't lock up your gun and it gets stolen and you don't report as such and it's used to kill the clerk in a liquor store robbery then breathe in deep. It will be over soon.

Good luck with that in Georgia. No age limit for long gun possession. No secure storage laws. No child access prevention laws. Open carry. Permitless carry. No background checks. Can't stop crazy people from having guns.

It was reported the kid was given an AR-15 as a "holiday gift" last year.

If that report is accurate, the father should spend the rest of his life in prison after last year's FBI/Local Police warning about the kid's fascination with Columbine and his online threats to commit a school shooting.
