US talks to China about N.Korea's dispatching of troops to Russia
www3.nhk.or.jp

... The US government has unveiled that it has talked to China about North Korea's dispatch of soldiers to Russia, which is continuing its invasion of Ukraine.

It apparently urged China, which has been a patron of the North, to exert its influence in a bid to avoid the situation destabilizing further.

US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters on Monday that they have communicated with Chinese officials about the matter and told them that the United States is concerned about it.

Miller said the US side has been making clear to China that the country has an "influential voice in the region." He said US officials have also told Beijing that they ought to be concerned about this destabilizing action by two of its neighbors, Russia and North Korea.

Also on Monday, Deputy Press Secretary of the US Defense Department, Sabrina Singh, said in a briefing that Pyongyang is believed to have sent around 10,000 soldiers to train in eastern Russia. She added that the troops will "probably augment Russian forces near Ukraine over the next several weeks."

She did not give details about where the North Korean troops are believed to be deployed, but said "a portion of those soldiers have already moved closer to Ukraine." ...

2nu - This Is Ponderous (1990)

Lyrics excerpt...

...
This is ponderous, man, really ponderous

I had this dream the other night
I went to work one day
And nobody remembered who I was
So, I decided to take the day off

On my way out
I run into my boss and he says
Hey, you look familiar
I said, thanks, people say that
A lot in these dreams

Then the horns kicked in
And my shoes started to squeak

Then all of a sudden
I'm standing on a beach
In some tropical part of the world
And there's this sign that says
'Aren't you supposed to be at work'
Sort of screamed out at me

Then I remembered

I'd been here in other dreams
But usually there was a water polo game

And a girl who could talk with her eyes
And she'd say
'Can you see what I'm saying'

Then the horns kicked in
And my shoes started to squeak
...

A song I have only heard on college radio.

Hank Johnson: US Congressman claims Guam 'will capsize from military influx'
www.telegraph.co.uk

... A United States Congressman, Hank Johnson, has become an unlikely internet hit, after he claimed the Asia Pacific island of Guam would "tip over and capsize" from a planned influx of American troops.

The 55 year-old Democratic member of the US House of Representatives claimed he was "obviously" joking when he made the remarks during evidence with a senior Naval officer about the US Military's build-up on the American territory.

While questioning Admiral Robert Willard, the head of the US Pacific fleet, the two-term Congressman from Georgia expressed concerns about the plans to post up to 5000 extra marines, and their families, to the island.

"My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," the former judge told the House Armed Services Committee hearing.

At the same time he leant to his left and added hand motions suggesting a large vessel tipping into the sea.

After a pregnant pause, Admiral Willard, replied that officials did not expect such a problem.

"We don't anticipate that," he said in a deadpan response, while trying hard not to laugh.

"The Guam population is currently about 175,000 and, again, with 8,000 Marines and their families, that is an addition of about 25,000 more into the population."

Since the exchange last Friday, it has become the most viewed viral video over the past 24 hours.

Since it was posted online late on Wednesday, it has gathered more than 800,000 hits on YouTube. Other versions have thousands of extra hits. ...

Prep Time: 30 min
Inactive Prep Time: 72 hr 0 min
Cook Time: 4 hr 20 min

Level: Easy

Serves: 4 to 6 servings

Sauerbraten
Recipe courtesy Alton Brown, 2005

Ingredients
2 cups water
1 cup cider vinegar
1 cup red wine vinegar
1 medium onion, chopped
1 large carrot, chopped
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon kosher salt, additional for seasoning meat
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 bay leaves
6 whole cloves
12 juniper berries
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 (3 1/2 to 4-pound) bottom round
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/3 cup sugar
18 dark old-fashioned gingersnaps (about 5 ounces), crushed
1/2 cup seedless raisins, optional

Directions

In a large saucepan over high heat combine the water, cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, onion, carrot, salt, pepper, bay leaves, cloves, juniper, and mustard seeds. Cover and bring this to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Pat the bottom round dry and rub with vegetable oil and salt on all sides. Heat a large saute pan over high heat; add the meat and
brown on all sides, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side.

When the marinade has cooled to a point where you can stick your finger in it and not be burned, place the meat in a non-reactive vessel and pour over the marinade. Place into the refrigerator for 3 days. If the meat is not completely submerged in the liquid, turn it over once a day.

After 3 days of marinating, preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Add the sugar to the meat and marinade, cover and place on the middle rack of the oven and cook until tender, approximately 4 hours.

Remove the meat from the vessel and keep warm. Strain the liquid to remove the solids. Return the liquid to the pan and place over
medium-high heat.

Whisk in the gingersnaps and cook until thickened, stirring occasionally. Strain the sauce through a fine mesh sieve
to remove any lumps.

Add the raisins if desired.

Slice the meat and serve with the sauce.

GOP voices frustration, disgust over Trump MSG rally
thehill.com

... Republicans are expressing frustration about controversial remarks made at former President Trump's Madison Square Garden rally, worrying it could complicate the party's outreach to Hispanic, Latino and Black voters.

Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, one of the featured guests at Trump's New York City event, sparked a furor after referring to Puerto Rico as a "a floating island of garbage," prompting some members of the GOP, like Rep. Anthony D'Esposito (R-N.Y.), who is Puerto Rican, to come out against the remarks. And Tucker Carlson mocked Vice President Harris's racial identity.

The controversy comes as Republicans have looked to expand their reach with different voting cohorts, which could hold the keys to another Trump reelection. ...

... Former President Donald Trump cited his close ties to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to counter attacks by Vice President Harris in Tuesday night's presidential debate that world leaders are "laughing" at Trump.
