The victim, 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew, ignited a large firework device and set it on his head. Family members tried to get him to stop, but the firework went off, and McGrew collapsed

No, but I remember from last year where a gent decided to blast off a mortar after placing it on his head. Caved in his skull.

Turns out that Newton's Third Law still applies, even on Federal holidays. And shooting a fireball several hundred feet into the air involves a lot of force which most human craniums are unable to handle

Tried looking it up, but was inundated with results showing that this is a common occurrence.

Sad for his family, and such a public way to go, they are going to see this reminder in the media for at least a little bit. His kids are seeing strangers laugh at their dead father who pulled an ill-advised prank. Stupid thing to do but sad.

A few years ago, on U.S. Route 30 in Hancock County WV an outdoor fireworks display went off in spectacular fashion, causing extensive damage to the storefront of the building having the fireworks sale, plus breaking the windows of the feed store on the other side of the highway.

Apparently, a shopper did something that caused a chain reaction. So the story went.

I was visiting in the area at the time and drove over the next morning to look at the damage.

As to what this guy put on top of his head, the first responder grapevine in south FL of which my son is a part says: mortar with the energy released blasting down through the spine, instant death. Horrors for his unfortunate family.

A small town located on the bank of the Ohio River decided to hire a company to handle their annual fireworks display from a barge out in the middle of the river. Something went wrong and a chain reaction set the barge ablaze when all the fireworks went off simultaneously.

The cause was never determined. All four employees aboard the barge were killed.
