Times, Post Jump Onboard Trump Camp's Swiftboating of Walz

Josh Marshall: The Post's and the Times pieces on Tim Walz service record are more egregious and spurious than you're probably able to imagine. The accusations come from two members of his unit who are clearly MAGA partisans and who floated them during his 2022 reelection campaign for Minnesota governor in coordination with Walz's Republican opponent. The attacks aren't just "like" the Swift Boat attacks from 2004. They're literally the work of the same guy, Chris LaCivita, now the co-manager of the Trump campaign and the strategist who ran the Swift Boat attacks in 2004 and cut the commercials.

The accusation, such as it is, is that Walz retired from service just before his unit was deployed to Iraq.

The first thing to note here is that career military people can retire. (Walz served for 24 years.) That's how it works. If you're needed, there's something called stop-loss orders, which the Pentagon issues during periods of acute need; they not only prevent retirements but can involuntarily extend people's period of enlistment. These were issued repeatedly during the Iraq War and in the years of active U.S. military involvement in Iraq.

Walz successfully ran for Congress in 2006 and there's abundant evidence that at least from early 2005 he was discussing with confidants in his unit whether or not to retire to run for Congress. His newly announced campaign put out a press release in March 2005 which said that it was possible that "all or a portion of Walz's battalion could be mobilized to serve in Iraq within the next two years." Walz officially retired in May 2005 and his unit got initial call up orders in July 2005. They were eventually deployed to Iraq in March 2006.

The overriding point here is that Walz didn't just say, well, I might get deployed. I'm outta here. It is well-documented that he was already planning to run for Congress, had been discussing with fellow guardsmen for some time whether he would retire as part of his plans to run for Congress and in fact had already announced his run months before he retired. I don't know the exact regulations. But I'm pretty sure National Guarding isn't the kind of thing where you put in two weeks notice. There's a fairly elaborate process for retirement. He officially retired in May 2005. I would imagine he had to start that process months before.

I'm not surprised the Trump campaign is going there. I mean, they're vicious degenerates and professional liars. But even more generally, campaigns put out lots of tendentious attacks. But we should expect a lot better from the country's leading dailies, especially charges directly from a campaign that contain so many red flags. Once a major paper picks up a hit and gives it credulous coverage it stops being a campaign attack and becomes a "story." It's a very specific kind of editorial decision.

Yep, the infamous liberal media strikes again trying to tip the scales in favor of another pair of Republican liars spouting another intentional lie. You'd almost think that the major media might not be in the tank for Democrats at all. But everybody knows that wrong, right?

The attach ads are even made by the same guy??????

I thought it was strange how the Repugs were acting like it was 2004.

Honest people would say we always need truth and honesty from the media and not double standards. Just like the same people would say we need honest elections where only eligible American citizens get to vote.

But there are dishonest people who would say they are ----- dory with a biased lying media and dishonest elections as long as their side wins.

Tim Walz suffered acute hearing loss from working with artillery for so many years.

The military wanted to force him to retire because if it. But when 9/11 happened, he asked that he be allowed to complete his 6 year reenlistment. That's how he rolled.

He wasn't counting the days until he had 20 years in so he could cash in on retirement benefits like some have who joined have just so they could reap the benefits of free college and retirement benefits and got out as soon as they hit 20 years.

Tim Walz is an actual patriot.

BTW, Trump can't even remember which foot he supposedly had bone spurs in.

PS - bone spurs don't magically disappear. They have to be surgically removed.

Trump was a draft dodger via fraud.

It's sad that Walz tarnished an otherwise admirable record of service. But his embellishment of his service calls to question his character. Combined with Kamala's well known and documented character flaws this is very troubling indeed.

" But his embellishment of his service calls to question his character."

Too bad he didn't fake bone spurs, right? Would that have been better?

Do you have evidence that Trump's bones spurs were fake? Trump isn't claiming to have served is he? Indeed, military service is not a requirement for the highest office, Clinton, Obama and Biden never served. Clinton and Biden used questionable methods to avoid serving in Vietnam. At any rate, lying/Embellishing service to get elected is troubling.

" Do you have evidence that Trump's bones spurs were fake?"

Sure.

Also, Bone spurs don't heal on their own.

" lying/Embellishing service to get elected is troubling."

What about lying/Embellishing to get out of serving? Because you seem to have no problem if it's followed by an (R).

Also, Bone spurs don't heal on their own.

They require surgery.

Surely Trump will release the x-rays, right? When pigs fly.

He hasn't released tax returns, college transcripts, or credible medical exam reports despite promising to many times. ...

Not to cast doubt on your medical degree but bones spurs don't always require surgery.

Nice deflection from Tim's military service embellishment and the troubling weakness of character he displayed.

None of these politicians running for office have great character. The question is whether their character (or lack thereof) falls below an acceptable bar.

Things like past plagiarism (in Biden's case) or padding/embellishing a C.V. (in Walz's case) is hardly comparable to someone who abused a public office and bragged about intending to do it again.
