Trump Suffers Unintentionally Funny Meltdown After DNC

Steve Benen: Former President Donald J. Trump was watching television on Thursday night and he did not like what he saw. His newly minted Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, had just accused him of groveling to dictators, imperiling democracy, betraying American values and, to top it off, deemed him "an unserious man." So Mr. Trump picked up the telephone and called Fox News.

Trump appeared on the air for about 10 minutes, during which time he not only raged incoherently, he also accidentally pushed random buttons on his phone. The interview - I'm using the word loosely - might've gone on longer, but Fox anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum effectively cut off the former president, mid-rant, so that the network could move on to other programming.

And while it was certainly amusing to see Fox effectively tell Trump they no longer wanted to hear him whine uncontrollably, it was even funnier when the Republican hung up with one conservative media, only to then call another.

In fact, almost immediately after Trump ranted on Fox, he called Newsmax to keep the meltdown going a while longer.

Donald is helping Kamala's campaign every single time he forces voters to compare the comportment of both candidates - and particularly their vision of America now, and moving forward, under their leadership.

Kamala speaks of duty, honor, and unity of purpose amongst all Americans while Trump continues to spew bile, hurl insults, and whines incessantly that this most privileged of men is somehow a victim of unfairness - as though most people who inherit $400 million view themselves as aggrieved.

Kamala called this clown a clown, and he put on his big red nose and pointy hat to prove it on both Fox News and Newsmax as his personal attempt at catharsis. All that's been missing so far is Harris invoking the infamous pun: When you bring in a clown, don't be surprised when you get an entire circus.

If a man is unserious then a man is not really a man. He's a child or someone's pet, and there's a good argument that Trump is both.

The orange diaper sniper actually typed out "where's Hunter?" last night.

The view from the New York Times:

While Ms. Harris was speaking, he took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to provide real-time commentary.

His posts there, capitalized in a haphazard manner, were less directed at her specific remarks than at broader complaints about issues that Mr. Trump wants to keep the focus on: crime, immigration and the economy.

At times, he digressed.

"WHERE'S HUNTER?" Mr. Trump asked as Ms. Harris came onstage, reviving one of his favorite slogans about the son of President Biden, who withdrew his candidacy weeks ago.

At one point, referring to Ms. Harris, Mr. Trump asked, in all capital letters, "Is she talking about me?" (She was, often.)

Mr. Trump also accused Ms. Harris's running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, of puffing up his rsum as a leader of a high school football team. "Walz was an ASSISTANT Coach, not a COACH," he wrote.

Several times during his tv appearance, the Fox anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum tried to interject to ask a question. Several times, Mr. Trump ignored them. "Mr. President, let me interrupt," Mr. Baier pleaded at one point. Mr. Trump kept talking.

The call-in - which lasted for 10 minutes, until Fox News informed Mr. Trump that the network had run out of time - was hastily arranged.

At several points during the call, a familiar beeping sound interrupted Mr. Trump's remarks. It appeared that the former president was accidentally pressing buttons on the keypad of his phone.

Trump has the emotional maturity of a petulant 10 year old brat.

I don't think we should get overly concerned about things Trump says and does from here on out. He's clearly falling to pieces.

We can still enjoy it though. Elder abuse is sad, but if they want to televise it...

REDIAL

I have no sympathy for a man who has brought so many problems down on his own head. But I do understand what drives a control freak like Trump to respond in ways that make him feel like he still has the upper hand. Right now, the shock of losing control of this election has him drowning in a sea of insecurity, anger and fear. Mostly fear.

Kamala was right when she said she knows his "type." It's a fair guess that he'll keep digging his hole deeper until he buries himself in defeat . . . and hopefully in the hands of the law.
