Impact Plastics said several employees died in the flooding from Helene. The TBI is investigating after several employees disputed the company's response.

After the remaining rescue and recover operations, after the rebuilding efforts are well along ... there is going to be an influx of lawyers. Do the employees of Impact Plastics have a valid complaint against the company for not letting them leave? I have not a clue.

When one is responsible for competent decisions and the lives of others one had better know exactly what one is doing. We had better expect that from every leader and politician in high places. I'm very skeptical of those currently in power. Too self serving.

You need permission to leave work when the power is out? What are you a ten year old? Anyway, if the parking lot is flooded, I wouldn't hop in my car and start driving unless I had a clear path to safety.

Your alias obviously seems to not know the work requirements of some companies.

Back in the 70's I visited manufacturing plants of corporations that intentionally put their factories in the South because the the people there were so appreciative of the jobs provided that they did not complain.

But to the point of your comment, maybe you should ask yourself why there seems to be an upsurge of workers wanting to join unions.

Did the workers have the opportunity to leave before it became dangerous for them to do so?

I suspect the ham units are using portable generators. Given the capability of 40m signals, they are communicating well beyond the areas that are experiencing the destruction.

Meanwhile, volunteers likely are very local and better able to deliver some supplies and, obviously, are concerned with a vastly smaller area. FEMA is faced with a much larger area and task. Fortunately, FEMA's budget wasn't being hampered by recent GOP inaction on the FEMA budget (*cough*).

If one wants to complain about lack of action, they should at least consider the size of the task and place the blame on lack of resources where it belongs.

BTW, long range communication (e.g., 40m) probably isn't very useful in a disaster response. Suggest something more in the 2m to 6m frequencies:

Ham Radio Emergency Frequencies

34.90 MHz: Nationwide emergency channel for the National Guard.
39.46 MHz: Emergency communication channel for local and state police.
47.42 MHz: Nationwide relief operations channel for the Red Cross.
52.525 MHz: FM calling frequency for ham radio operators in their six-meter band, especially active during exceptional propagation conditions.
121.50 MHz: International aeronautical emergency frequency.
138.225 MHz: Primary FEMA channel for disaster relief operations.
146.52 MHz: Ham radio frequency for non-repeater communications on the two-meter band.
151.625 MHz: Utilized by mobile businesses such as circuses, exhibitions, trade shows, and sports teams. Other channels in use are 154.57 and 154.60 MHz.
154.28 MHz: Local fire department emergency communication channel. Additional frequencies include 154.265 and 154.295 MHz.

Well yes you do need permission if you would like to keep your job. And if you are in a place like this with limited employers you don't just leave at risk of losing that job - especially not knowing what was coming. We lose power once or twice a year for more than a couple of minutes at one plant or another. Workers don't just "leave". Typically after a about half an hour we have heard from the power company and if the outage is expected to be over soon they are required to stay. They ARE getting paid.

As for the rising water and flooding I agree. unless there was higher ground I was aimed at - not going to be doing that - but - what do you do? Just go to the roof?
