Oregon steps in it in the pursuit of Dei

Looks like a guy got fired for treating all his coworkers equally without regard for race color or identity.

It is bad for women': Workers condemn culture at Oregon Forestry Department Oct. 09, 2024, 1:51 p.m

"The state has received about a dozen complaints against Oregon Department of Forestry leaders this year, with some employees alleging a hostile culture toward women, a lack of diversity and a fear of retaliation.

The complaints include one from Brenda McComb, vice chair of the Oregon Board of Forestry, who told state officials that she had seen little evidence that the Forestry Department had advanced "diversity representation" among its workforce or advisory committees."

State Provides More Information About Suspension of Deputy Director at Department of Forestry October 10, 2024 at 2:11 pm PDT

"the agency had placed Shaw on leave at the height of the largest wildfire season in Oregon history.
..
On Aug. 6, Shaw's boss, Cal Mukumoto, the state forester, sent DAS director Berri Leslie an email with the subject line "ODF sensitive issue."

That same day, Mukumoto sent Shaw a letter telling him he was "duty stationed at home on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation regarding alleged misconduct." While he is on leave, Shaw is cut off from state facilities and equipment.
..
On Oct. 10, The Oregonian reported a story on ODF that appears related. In that story, reporter Noelle Crombie wrote that "the state has received about a dozen complaints against Oregon Department of Forestry leaders this year, with some employees alleging a hostile culture toward women, a lack of diversity and a fear of retaliation."

How about hiring the most qualified person via meritocracy?

#2 | Posted by BellRinger at 2024-10-16 02:53 AM

yeah, they just all happen to be white. you dont even see your own privilege.

#3 | Posted by Alexandrite at 2024-10-16 04:22 AM

#3. That's very racist of you.

I guarantee if you are ever in need of life saving surgery you will demand the best possible surgeon even if he or she is white.

You are guilty of the soft bigotry of low expectations

What if they are equally qualified yet one is white and one is a minority?

Who gets the job?

That's an excellent question. My knee jerk is the tie breaker should go to the minority. However what if the minority is one of LeBron James kids and the white guy is someone like JD Vance?

Who grew up with more privilege? The answer to that in my hypothetical is obvious.

Honestly I don't know the answer to your question because it's not as binary as it seems.

It's a thought provoking question, Donnerboy.

What if they are equally qualified...?

That isn't very likely. I'd buy "relatively equal", but they are never going to be identical.

Good point. Objective metrics do exist. Test scores, GPA, etc. But a true evaluation involves subjective metrics as well.

This is how uneducated Republicans are.

They think DEI is really ALL about hiring. And in hiring its ALL about race. That's it.

Hiring is a tiny tiny fraction.

DEI focuses on HOW you treat your employees AFTER they are hired. And it's about diversity on all levels: race, age, sex, gender identity, gender expression, (dis) ability, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, ethnicity, national origin, immigration status, citizenship, socioeconomic status, housing status, marital status, language, and political perspective.

So in your hypothetical, Jeff, you'd include the background of Vance too, specifically his socioeconomic upbringing. (Of course you'd also look negatively on his personal views of basically hating anyone not white, Christian, and Republican)

#10. Can you address me without straw?

I'll answer your questions when you want an honest conversation.

I won't respond if you are going to assign a position to me that i haven't taken and/or you are combative for no reason.

No you won't.

The ONLY thing you want to talk about is race based hiring. You don't even understand what DEI is or do any research. It's all knee jerk reactions from 4Chan memes that the rest of us must fact check you on, just like everything else.

You'll do one of the same things you always do:
1. Ignore the fact check
2. Post a completely unrelated tangent
3. Run away

Of course they were not equal!

I told you they were different races.

Also I was a hiring supervisor. I have had many applicants that were very equal (relatively equal) in their qualifications. My touch stone was always whether they had military service or not. Because I know that if they served honorably then I was sure they were already well trained and disciplined.

The correct answer would be that would depend on the diversity of the work force. If the candidates are equally qualified and you did not have a diversified workforce then you should be hiring the minority.

Why?

Because minorities have been discriminated against in America and it's time we made it up to them any way we can. No matter what flavor of maga BS you have been slurping down racism is NOT over in America.

There still persists a hardcore white supremacy racist ideology, which rejects outsiders, anyone who is not white.

So the question is. "What kind of American are you?" (-from the movie Civil War. )

My answers "I am the kind of American who seeks a more perfect Union. Not one divided by race or national origin." (In which case I clearly would have been shot)

And all other things being "equal" the diversity of your workforce should be one of those metrics.

#15 | Posted by donnerboy at 2024-10-16 02:10 PM

Like it not uniformity can be a good thing and when it comes to specific jobs we don't need diversity we need the best.

We need diversity AND the best. No reason you can't have both.

I take that as a no regarding having an actual discussion.

#18 | Posted by BellRinger at 2024-10-16 03:46 PM

Sometimes there's no room for two new hires but more importantly if you want to take a chance with someone who's less than the best applicant thats your thing but you can't demand that of others.
