Florida is set to duke it out in the courtroom with the adult entertainment industry over a state law that would require websites that host adult content to verify the age of their users.

This will lead to the demise of Florida as we know it.

Adult websites would have to contract with third-party vendors tasked with verifying users' ages.

This is just capitalism in the works.

You now have to pay a third party vendor in order to watch free porn.

Why do adults have to do this? Censorship disguised as "protecting the children".

Is your child currently watching porn? If you don't know, that's on you. There's ways to put parental control devices and apps on all your devices.

Also. Keep an eye on your kids browsing history.

Talk with your kids. Be involved in their lives.

Religious prudes are taking over the government.

From the cited article...

... Adult websites would have to contract with third-party vendors tasked with verifying users' ages. While not explicitly specified in statute, lawmakers have suggested options like facial scans, ID scans, or other personal identifying information that could possibly be used for age verification. The law forbids that data from being used for other purposes, and the data is not allowed to be retained after the verification is complete. ...

OK, my first question is ...

If those ~verification~ companies are not located in Florida, how does a Florida law affect what they do with the personal recognition data gathered?

From the Pornhub website:

YOU WILL LOSE ACCESS TO PORNHUB IN 11 DAYS

Did you know that your government wants you to give your driver's license before you can access PORNHUB?

As crazy as that sounds, it's true. You'll be required to prove you are 18 years or older such as by uploading your government ID for every adult content website you'd like to access.

We don't want minors accessing our site and think preventing that from happening is a good thing. But putting everybody's privacy at risk won't achieve that.

Curious about the right solution?

We encourage you to learn more about device-based verification solutions that make the internet safer for all, especially children, while also respecting your privacy. The latter video is excellent in explaining what should be done and why Fine/Florida and Texas "solutions" are utter garbage.

Did you know that Florida also requires the same identification for purchasing tobacco, tickets to r/NC-17 movies and for purchasing alcohol???

Oh my goodness, bUh mY pRiVaCy!!!!

Also from the law:

As usual, hair on fire - Yav is at it again.

#8 you're going to equate showing an ID to a person to read, to scanning into an online entity as the same thing? Intellectually dishonest at best.

There are also plenty of laws about how data is kept, yet I keep having to lock my information down because of breach after breach... But I'm sure these companies will be better about it. SMH

>the data is not allowed to be retained after the verification is complete.

Sure, but the penalty for doing so won't be anywhere near as large as the economic benefit of collecting and selling it, so these companies will be obligated to operate in violation of the law, especially if they're publicly traded companies.

Also "hair on fire" as a description for post #7?

When is the last time you bought alcohol? A lot of stores are going to a scan and saved image in case there's any problem in the future. Also, in my state you can get alcohol delivered and the delivery needs a scan of your ID and a signature.

And I don't have an issue with someone having to prove their age to consume things like pornography, tobacco or alcohol.

BS you're taking sides with a Pornography company whose complaining because they just lost their under 18 consumers in Florida.... and Texas.

#14 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2024-12-20 12:45 PM

I have not had to produce any id for alcohol, tobacco (I quit dipping a few years back), or to go to the movies in decades. I don't recall being carded at any time in my life except once - at Busch Gardens for the beer tasting. They carded everyone at that event. Your argument and analogy is utter crap and irrelevant to online.

Your go out on the limb even further with this nonsense about "under 18" consumers being the ones that the porn industry would be losing. Do you think that the only people that won't "age verify" are those that aren't 17 and under? Do you actually think that's all?

Again, I only posted what Pornhub had on their site. Now you're all upset and attributing all kinds of nonsense to it so you can continue to attack.

You keep doubling down on stupid. You look dumber each time you do it.

#15 | Posted by YAV at 2024-12-20 12:57 PM

I guess flagging my statement as funny is a step up for you. At least you didn't triple down.

#16 | Posted by YAV at 2024-12-20 03:38 PM

Personally, I have no qualms with pubescents 14 years and older viewing pornography. Their bodies and brain functions are changing. And artificial age laws won't change it. Instead of clutching your pearls, try being a mature adult and sit down with your kids to explain whatever it is you think they need to know about internet porn.

Turds is pretending to be offended by teenagers looking at pornography.

I'm actually not surprised. He's lost his mind. Ivermectin poisoning is sad to witness.

I'm not upset. I'm simply saying children don't need to consume things like alcohol, tobacco or pornography (throw guns in the mix too) and I agree with age verification for any of them.

Don't look now, but the site's two pedos just identified themselves for you above.

#19 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2024-12-20 04:44 PM

Repubs need big brother to keep them from watching porn.

Just like they need big church to keep them from acting on their homosexual urges.

Children is what, 4 year olds?

Yea. Agreed. You shouldn't give children access to any of them.

You never looked at porn in high school?

Too busy fkkking horses and praying to Jeebus?

#21 | Posted by ClownShack at 2024-12-20 08:35 PM

@#19 ... I'm simply saying children don't need to consume things like alcohol, tobacco or pornography (throw guns in the mix too) ...

I agree 100%.

But my concern here is not the blocking of minors from porn sites, indeed, I'd say that is a worthy goal, one which the parents of those children need to deal with. Is Florida admitting that the parents of children in Florida have no control over what their children do online? Because, if that is the case, then this becomes a whole different discussion.

My concern here is the usual "but it's to protect the children" rationalization that is so often used to enable surveying and monitoring.

In this instance, the typical way a website enables non-minor access is to ask for and maintain a databse of those who qualify to visit the site. Once that database is created and maintained, then it is subject to, let's call it, examination by others than the website.

So, was Florida's real purpose in this dictum to get access to the database of those Floridians who visit porn sites legally, if so, for what purpose?

Stated differently, what is the actual goal of Florida here?

Did you know kids weren't having sex before marriage until liberals messed that up?

Never happened, ever!

Intercourse should only be preformed for the purpose of reproducing and banned otherwise.

Florida approves limit, but not ban, on child marriage (2018)
www.reuters.com

... Lawmakers in the U.S. state of Florida approved a bill on Friday banning child marriage under the age of 17, one of the strictest measures in the nation, advocates said.

The measure, which goes to the governor for signature, is a compromise reached this week by legislators after an earlier version sought to ban marriage for anyone under 18.

The Florida governor intends to sign the bill into law, a spokeswoman said.

Child marriage is legal across the United States. While 18 is typically the minimum age, every state has legal loopholes or exceptions allowing children to wed at a younger age.

Under the new Florida measure, children aged 17 can marry with parental consent but face requirements such as a premarital preparation course. Also, 17-year-olds cannot marry someone more than two years older. ...

Almost 1,700 priests and clergy accused of sex abuse are unsupervised (2019)
www.nbcnews.com

... Nearly 1,700 priests and other clergy members that the Roman Catholic Church considers credibly accused of child sexual abuse are living under the radar with little to no oversight from religious authorities or law enforcement, decades after the first wave of the church abuse scandal roiled U.S. dioceses, an Associated Press investigation has found.

These priests, deacons, monks and lay people now teach middle-school math. They counsel survivors of sexual assault. They work as nurses and volunteer at nonprofits aimed at helping at-risk kids. They live next to playgrounds and daycare centers. They foster and care for children. ...
