The Situation: Why the Jan. 6 Pardons Won't Work

Not even the president can change the truth.

More

In The Situation, @benjaminwittes.bsky.social writes that if the goal of President Trump's pardons of the Jan. 6 defendants is to erase what happened in 2021, it won't work because "a president can frustrate justice, but he can't change the truth."

...
The Situation on Friday said goodbye to a genuinely decent man who had earnestly sought to do justice.

And now, as Maurice Sendak might put it, let the indecent rumpus start.

I could write this column today about the indecency of pardoning more than a thousand people convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection, making the point that this sort of indecency is really, really bad" -- but that's obvious.

I could write instead about the Kafkaesque nature of beginning a presidential proclamation on the subject of these clemency actions by describing the Jan. 6 prosecutions, many of which involved violent felonies, as "a grave national injustice" -- but that's also too obvious to spend any time on.

I could write about how the president's proclamation, which also "direct[s] the Attorney General to pursue dismissal with prejudice to the government of all pending indictments against individuals for their conduct related to the events at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021," constitutes a dramatic and overt presidential intervention in a series of ongoing criminal cases of precisely the sort that would normally provoke scandal. But that point too is obvious. Who needs to hear more about the investigative independence of the Justice Department? ...

The truth is that I have almost nothing non-obvious to say about the president's action -- just one thing, really.

It all won't work.

Oh, the president might accomplish a short-term goal. He has rewarded his friends. And he has thus shown others that he will protect them if they commit crimes or take risks for him. He has put the power of the United States federal government behind the patent lie that the prosecution of Jan. 6 rioters was an injustice requiring remedy, which is all part of the larger lie that the prosecution of Trump himself was political. And that -- in turn -- is all part of the still-larger lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him. So sure, he has thrown some dust in the air. ...

Won't work to do what?

Send the message that if you attack america on behalf of trump that he'll pardon you?

They will definitely work to do that.

Trumpers brag about how putin's puppet didn't start any foreign wars. When the civil war he's starting is much much worse.

#3 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2025-01-27 05:36 PM

They just won't include it in history books.

Give it a few generations, it will be forgotten.

And that"in turn"is all part of the still-larger lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him. So sure, he has thrown some dust in the air.

But if the long-term goal is to erase the ugly history of what happened in 2020 and 2021, to change Trump from the perpetrator into the victim of the crime, it won't work.

Pardoning those convicted, after all, doesn't erase the records of what they pled to. It doesn't erase the evidence presented to juries about what they did. It doesn't erase their own copious social media boasting about it all. Just as Trump can't change the truth about his own conduct by getting elected and getting the cases against himself dropped and projecting his own goals for weaponization of the Justice Department onto the prior administration, he cannot change either the truth about what his followers did"though he can wipe out the consequences for them. ...

This all reads like a lot of wishful thinking.

@#6 ... This all reads like a lot of wishful thinking. ...

I do not disagree.

I almost posted it as an OpEd because of that, but the site calls it an "article" in the URL, so I went ith that.

In hindsight, yeah, it looks more like an OpEd.

thx for catching that.

I wasn't trying to call you out.

I was mostly stating, there's a small group of very vocal angry people in this county who are making a lot of noise and driving the ship over the edge.

The rest of us due to apathy, or exhaustion, or the need to persist, are allowing them to control the situation.

In 2020, 81 million people voted for Biden. Since then, the MAGA minority has made so much noise about their disapproval of Biden, Trump cakewalked his way back into the presidency.

Over the next few years Trump is going to keep this nation so distracted with bullshht and corruption, 1/6 will disappear.

Conservatives are very aggressive at obtaining power and control.

Liberal are too pacific. Biden imagined winning over the hearts of conservatives. In his delusion, he lost this country. Maybe forever.

@#8 ... I wasn't trying to call you out. ...

I didn't take it as that.

I saw it more as a ~clarification,~ which I appreciated. :)

Back to the thread. ...

Yup, "distracted" is a good word to use. Pres Trump seems to go for the headlines, while shuffling the really important things under the radar.

Again, I do not disagree.

Pres Trump once said during his campaign ...

www.reuters.com

... Trump said: "Christians, get out and vote, just this time. "You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians." ...

No need to vote anymore?

Promises made and promises kept?

#9 | Posted by LampLighter at 2025-01-27 06:54 PM

No need to vote anymore?

Yea. A statement which he repeated several more times during his campaign.

To me it indicates one simply thing, republicans have discovered how to rig the Electoral College.

Something further highlighted when Trump thanked Musk at his inaugural address for knowing how the voting machines in Pennsylvania worked.

#10 | Posted by ClownShack at 2025-01-27 07:06 PM

... one simple thing ... *

No it'll be taught thusly:

"And in 2020 the democrats, after having killed hundreds of thousands of trump voters with their covid virus, hacked voting machines and stole the election from trump. So trump led a few brave patriots to stop their steal at the capitol on january 6th. The communists won that day and then launched a series of hoax investigations into glorious trump, who was protected by jesus in court and when democrats tried to assassinate him, but he defeated the democrats lies with the truth and everything has been awesome since then."

#12 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2025-01-27 07:09 PM

That's already the narrative for a lot of Trumpers.

Just ask BullBringer about all the Lawfare Trump's been through.

#13 | Posted by ClownShack at 2025-01-27 07:28 PM

Well, the pardons already seem to be backfiring.

One was pulled over for a vehicle infraction, had guns, and ended up being shot by a deputy.

Another is currently wanted for soliciting a minor (Per Daily Beast).

And the really big ones were already seen around the Capitol (talking to politicians) and now have been given free access to go there with the courts permission.

Won't end well, just sayin'...........

@#14 ... Won't end well, just sayin'........... ...

Agreed.

Target every single one of these -------- and make the rest of their miserable lives a living hell.

Speaking of pardons, still wondering shy Fauci's pardon needs to go back to 2014 - inquiring minds want to know as seems very suspicious.

IMO he must have been involved with the Wuhan Lab as far back as that time frame, and just a reminder: Gain Of Function can be translated as developing diseases for Biological Warfare which could result in/translate to millions dead - Oops, doesn't that sound familiar.....

No worries. Trump will just go back to 2013 and find something to charge him with. It's what fascist dictators like trump and putin do to those who embarrass them.

Funny how you morons will believe every conspiracy theory you hear except the obviously true one about trump working for putin.
