Liberal prayers for mass layoffs go unanswered

WASHINGTON (AP) " The number of Americans filing unemployment claims last week fell slightly as businesses continue to retain employees despite growing economic uncertainty over U.S. trade policy. Applications for jobless benefits fell by 2,000 to 227,000 for the week ending May 17, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's pretty close to the 230,000 new applications analysts forecast.

Despite showing some signs of weakening during the past year, the labor market remains robust, with plentiful jobs and relatively few layoffs.

Earlier this month, the government reported that U.S. employers added a surprisingly strong 177,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate held at a historically healthy 4.2%.

I have a hunch that in a month or two, ScottS will be no where to be found when unemployment starts marching upwards.

It's kind of like Jeff/Bellringer now that actual Censorship is happening.

And it's like ALL MAGAts now that prices are jumping up.

This is just how stupid MAGAts are.

Nah they won't go away. They revel in their stupidity and gullibility.

They'll be here dutifully repeating the administration's lines and excuses.

What's ironic is that Scott posts this story after we keep reading about mass layoffs every day at all these major companies.

ScottSy posts nothing but Republican propaganda.

He'd claim the sun rises in the East if he thought that could help Trump.

The article comparison is with the Covid economy from five years ago and the data doesn't yet include the DOGE layoffs and repercussions.

FTA:

Applications for jobless benefits fell by 2,000 to 227,000 for the week ending May 17, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's pretty close to the 230,000 new applications analysts forecast.

Weekly applications for jobless benefits are seen as representative of U.S. layoffs and have mostly bounced around a historically healthy range between 200,000 and 250,000 since COVID-19 ravaged the economy and wiped out millions of jobs five years ago.
..
It's not clear if or when the job cuts ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency " or "DOGE," spearheaded by billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk " will surface in the weekly layoffs data.

You -------- were praying for mass layoffs due to the tariffs - they didn't happen. Sorry you -------- were disappointed - AGAIN.

Layoffs due to firing a bunch of useless government employees is a GOOD THING. They can go do something productive. With the illegals getting deported, we can switch 'learn to code' with 'learn to drywall'.

One thing that stood out to me, after digging deeper into this current jobless report ...

People seem to be staying in their current jobs, not looking for better jobs elsewhere.

That dynamism of the job market seems to be quite diminished and, more important, hiring has held steady or diminished.

www.reuters.com

... "Employers have so far elected to keep their staff headcounts steady despite the swirling winds of unprecedented policy changes for the economy emanating from down in Washington," said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS. "There is no serious deterioration in the labor market to date, and the economy is weathering the storm for now." ...

economictimes.indiatimes.com

... Companies have been reluctant to add to headcount because of the economic uncertainty related to tariffs. That has left many people who lose their jobs to experience long spells of unemployment. The median duration of unemployment jumped to 10.4 weeks in April from 9.8 weeks in March. ...

That likely adds to the reluctance of people to switch jobs.

If it were such A Good Thing, then why is DOGE fighting transparency in what it has done?

@#11 ... You boneheads need to stop feeding this troll. ...

Yeah, it's a troll. A poor one at that. It even seems to contraction itself within its comments. And it seems to run and hide when questioned with facts. So, yeah, a troll. I agree. A troll.

But I object your apparent characterization of me as a "bonehead." (could that be another purpose of the troll?)

OK, allow me to ask differently ...

When I see such an abject misinformation source on this most august site, should I just sit by and, by my silence, agree with the misinformation it posts?

Or should I attempt to counter the misinformation?

To date, I've been choosing the latter.

So, please dissuade me from that action.

Oh really, ankle biter? What specifically are you referring to?

Sorry.

In this case, it is a term of endearment...
