How Scientific Empires End

Roald sagdeev has already watched one scientific empire rot from the inside. When Sagdeev began his career, in 1955, science in the Soviet Union was nearing its apex. At the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow ...

The rapid decline of American science has few precedents in history, writes @rossandersen.bsky.social. We are witnessing an unparalleled act of self-sabotage:

"Empire" has sinister connotations

Reminds me the most of the Turkish king or whatever who had the astronomer killed and turned his back on the budding science of astronomy.

The astronomer has predicted an eclipse that day, when it didn't happen the king had him executed.

Next day came the eclipse. But by then the damage was done.

And that's why the Muslim world is pretty backwards, compared to the West today. One of their leading societies chose to reject Science. Just like Republicans have chosen to reject science in 2025.

A lot of people reject science these days.

The Soviets and the US had a post-WW2 science boom because of the captured nazi scientists and invalidating all the patents of the German companies.

If you want an example of how a science empire falls, you can take the EU as a whole. They used to invent ---- including wireless communication leadership (which, ironically was also born out of WW2 nazi tank communication systems) but now they just have Chinese produced 'European' luxury brands. West Virginia has a better tech scene that the whole of the EU.

I'm sure whatever research you're referring to has been thoroughly garbled by your science-illiterate noggin.

DOGE has been devastating to scientific research and it can't realistically be immediately reversed. When an arbitrary redection of the nembers of scientists working on a goal happens their research will continue somewhere else....like maybe China? We won't flly understand the damage this crazy DOGE is doing to the U.S. for decades and when we do it will be too late to catch back up. The United States will be a major leader in science and technology only as long as our leaders are not controlled by political ideology. When science and technology must comply with ideology as it does right now in the U.S. we will just start falling farther and farther behind. CPresident Xi probably had a good laugh when he heard about DOGE!
