A failed Republican political candidate was sentenced to 80 years in federal prison for his convictions in a series of drive-by shootings at the homes of state and local lawmakers in Albuquerque in the aftermath of the 2020 election. A jury convicted Solomon Pena earlier this year of conspiracy, weapons, and other charges in the shootings in Dec 2022 and Jan 2023 on the homes of four Democratic officials, including the current state House speaker. Prosecutors, who had sought a 90-year sentence, said Pena has shown no remorse and had hoped to cause political change by terrorizing people who held contrary views to him into being too afraid to take part in political life.
Every eleven minutes someone in the US is murdered by an assailant using a firearm. In an average year, 507 people die and 821 are wounded by guns in New Mexico, which has the 9th-highest rate of gun violence in the US. New Mexico firearm licenses in 2021: 122,968; 46.2% of adults have at least one gun at home. These Democrats in New Mexico were lucky that Pena missed, unlike the victims killed by the faux Christian Republican maniac Vance Luther Boelter in Minnesota this past June. Boelter had a hit list of 70 more victims.
