Your TV Is Secretly Watching You -- Here's How to Stop It

A hidden feature on most smart TVs tracks everything you watch--even offline. Learn how to shut it down in minutes.

This is called Automated Content Recognition, or ACR, and it's usually enabled by default on newer TVs.

Comments

"ACR doesn't handle app-level data, as in the video streaming example above. Instead, it watches or listens to what you're streaming and uses that information for the TV maker's purposes.

ACR analyzes everything that goes through your TV and looks for giveaways hidden in the audio or video signal. Those digital fingerprints let ACR know what you're watching, no matter which app, service, or media format you're using."

A lot of people knew about the above. It's also true that the Chinese panel makers, who make most panels for most of the Brands, are actually able to significantly subsidize their prices.

"The Subsidized Business ModelData as Revenue: Manufacturers like Vizio, Samsung, and TCL use ACR data to generate massive, ongoing profits from ad targeting, often making more money from user data than from the sale of the physical television.

Hidden Costs: The lower purchase price of modern 4K smart TVs is facilitated by this surveillance business model, which turns viewers into products, according to a LinkedIn report.

Data Brokers: Collected information is sold to advertisers and marketers to build detailed consumer profiles.

How to Protect Your Privacy Disable ACR: Look through your TV's settings for terms like "Viewing Data," "Live Plus," or "Automatic Content Recognition" and turn them off."

(more on that in the thread link article on how to disable ACR for different brands)

So really the part about how they are, "making more money from user data than from the sale of the physical television."... was interesting.

My TV is not connected to the home network. So it can monitor my viewing habits all it wants.

It is not able to report the results of that surveillance to anyone.
