In my experience, most insular intelligent groups will find themselves speaking in self creative accents, as well as creating new words and phrases specific to their commonality of endevour.

I saw this over and over again as a Communications Specialist, beginning in their early training, and continuing as they became wizened Journeyman vets.

This is so cool.

I do note that right out of college I worked in the great state of Kentucky for a year.

After that, when I came back East, my friends chided my about the accent I had developed since I last saw them.

Speech accents are a curious thing for me.

And, don't ask about the four years I spent in Brooklyn for high school and what that did to my accent. ....

I am not surprised that the inhabitants of this microcosm developed their own accent.
